Patch 4.2: Pet collector achievements updated on the PTR

A few new achievements were added for pet collectors in the latest PTR patch today, according to Wowhead. The small patch contains three new achievements for players who can collect 100, 125, and 150 non-combat pets.

Just like with previous pet collecting achievements (Shop Smart, Shop Pet…Smart, Lil’ Game Hunter) our obsessive efforts will once again be rewarded with a unique pet. We’ve seen Nuts’ Acorn in the patch 4.2 game files before and the Celestial Dragon (pictured above) appeared in game files back in Wrath of the Lich King, but the Brilliant Kaliri is a new addition. Currently there aren’t any datamined pictures of the pet, but I can only assume it will be very similar to the Kaliri mobs found in Skettis and other zones from The Burning Crusade.

One thing I’m curious about with these pets is if they’ll have any special animations or Easter eggs like previous pets have. If you remember, the skunk pet from the 50 pet achievement pays tribute to Pepé Le Pew from Looney Tunes by chasing nearby Black Tabby and Bombay cat pets.

The news is already rolling out for the upcoming WoW Patch 4.2! Preview the new Firelands raid, marvel at the new legendary staff, and get the inside scoop on new quest hubs — plus new Tier 12 armor!

The OverAchiever: New achievements in patch 4.2

Every Thursday, The OverAchiever shows you how to work toward those sweet achievement points. This week, pet biscuits make us happy … for a little while, at least.

We’re going to take another break from our Mountain O’ Mounts series to examine upcoming achievements in patch 4.2. We got an avalanche of news on these last Friday via MMO-Champion’s datamining efforts on PTR build 14117, and they all look pretty nifty.

There are 16 achievements associated with the new Firelands/Mount Hyjal daily quest area, on which I have very little information right now, so we’re going to examine those later. However, that still leaves us with new pet, legendary, dungeon, and anniversary achievements.

Patch 4.2: New achievements include new daily areas and companion pets

Tons of new achievements have been added to the PTR for the upcoming patch 4.2, including the Molten Front and the Regrowth achievements. Blizzard has stated that a bunch of the encounters in the new daily hubs will be directly linked to “raid-type” damage dodging and healing, so it is nice to see achievements for some of those feats.

Some of the achievements hint at some awesome characters showing up in unexpected places, like Have… Have We Met?, potentially getting Mankrik, Thassarian, Linken, and more on the front lines in Hyjal and the Firelands. Also, pet collectors are going to jump for joy, as collecting 100, 125 and 150 pets now rewards players with pet biscuits for 100 and 125, and a new pet, Nuts, at the 150 mark.

The OverAchiever: Mountain O’ Mounts from achievements

Every Thursday, The Overachiever shows you how to work toward those sweet achievement points. This week, 10 little points are all that stand between us and a new ... something.

Many of the mounts this week be familiar to you if you’ve read The OverAchiever: Pimp Thy Ride, which I wrote before the Cataclysm content patch with an eye toward the number of people who wanted to slap a 310% mount on their toons before it had to be trained. Sadly, none of the mounts described in that article, barring one, will grant Master Riding for free now.

WoW Moviewatch: How to Win At Achievements

I was actually kind of surprised to discover that the sultan of sarcasm, Wowcrendor, hadn’t already covered the subject of cheevos in his “How to Win” series. How to Win At Achievements takes a long, meaningful look at these silly little side quests in WoW.

Achievements are an odd feature in game. They really really matter to some people, or they don’t matter at all. They certainly can be incredibly frustrating, especially if you’re trying to get a cheevo done with a PUG.

There are two important character development notes from How to Win At Achievements. First, note that Billy has quickly and adeptly understood the point of the video. Bill’s getting smarter. Soon, like Skynet, he will gain self-awareness and take over the world. Second, we have the addition of a new character: the Grats Cow. We’ll have to see how these things develop in the future.

Breakfast Topic: What’s your approach to guild achievements?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

Back when patch 3.0.2 hit, World of Warcraft took a page from the rest of the gaming world by adding in those ever-addicting things called “achievements.” No doubt you’ve had plenty of experience with them by now. If you haven’t specifically worked to complete any, you’ve at least stumbled upon a shiny flashing box or two. Not everyone’s a fan of these systems, of course — but for many of us, there’s a lot of fun to be had in these secondary objectives.

Fast forward two years, and Cataclysm has ushered in a new era of virtual accomplishment with the new guild achievements. While they initially allowed guilds to level past the daily experience cap, they have since been hotfixed to play more of a non-mandatory role in the success of a guild. Essentially, they are now just like individual achievements — except damn near impossible to complete without a little help from your friends.

I’ve personally always been a fan of achievement hunting, so I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this new subset of tasks to work toward. In this spirit, I’ve definitely done some things I might not have done before. Critter Kill Squad, for example, led my guild to a rather fun midnight murdering spree in Terrorweb Tunnel. Also, for the first time, I’m in a guild arena team doing regular matches. Hell, I even decided which alts to level based on which race/class combos we needed the most.

Have the new guild achievements caused you to make any of these kinds of changes? Are you perhaps taking a more languid approach by slaughtering penguins and bunnies only when it happens to be convenient? Maybe, like with regular achievements, there are a lot of you out there who simply don’t care one whit. Tell us all about it!

Breakfast Topic: How hard are you working on guild achievements?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

The guild leveling system is both interesting and annoying at times. There are some fun and interesting guild perks, as well as some obscure ones. Whether fiercely gathering, fishing, cooking and crafting in an attempt to reach the guild totals, or running around killing every critter in sight, there is no shortage of work to be done to accomplish all the guild achievements and access all the guild perks. Some people dive headlong into them, and others just take care of their own toons — and whatever comes is just a bonus.

The idea of having every race/class combo at 85 and at least honored with the guild to get an extra bank tab is frustrating. Seriously, how many dwarf mages have you seen running around? On top of that, the caps for guild rep each week leaving you just a few points shy of that next rep level can be disheartening. I have leveled a human hunter to 85 and am currently working on a dwarf rogue and gnome priest. Other guildies race-changed to worgen or the new race/class options, and we are down to being only a few short.

I have taken my main out and killed hundreds of critters, fished in endless numbers of pools, and between my alts, I skin, herb, and mine. My guild as a whole took the fishing to get the fish feast recipe as a major endeavor, as well as making flasks for the cauldron recipes, having everyone get their flasks made by elixir-specced guild members. My guild certainly teams up to push achievements hard.

So how hard are you working toward the guild achievements? Which ones are you focusing on the most? Is your guild teaming up to push out the achievements? Or are you busy being a lone ranger?

Account-wide achievements won’t be available for “quite some time”

For those of us with multiple alts, there’s one topic that seems to come up again and again at the top of our wish lists: account-wide achievements. The reasons are numerous. Achievements are often a barrier for entry into PUG groups. Some achievements are so absolutely tedious and time consuming that most of us only have the patience to do them once. And, of course, some achievements award us with some pretty cool items that we’d like to be able to use on our alts, like the Reins of the Bloodbathed Frostbrood Vanquisher.

Blizzard’s developers are keenly aware of our desire for such functionality, and today on the Blizzard forums, they promised that it’s something they’re working on. Just don’t expect it anytime soon, and don’t expect any additional account-wide functionality like account-wide reputations or professions. So says blue poster Wryxian:

BoA’s, 1 step further
We do like the idea of account-wide achievements and it is something we have liked for a while. However we don’t currently have the tech to be able to implement them as we’d like to, and probably won’t have that for quite some time.

Account-wide professions or reputations are not something that is currently on our to-do list. If we were to think about that kind of thing, we’d have to carefully consider such a change as it has potential to heavily favour those of us who enjoy playing multiple alts. People who prefer just playing one character might not really see that as fair.

Given how soon Blizzard typically means when they say “soon,” we probably shouldn’t be too optimistic when trying to interpret “quite some time” into real-world weeks and months. Perhaps in time for the next expansion? Perhaps something our grandchildren will be able to enjoy?

Breakfast Topic: Achievements that should have been

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

The advent of achievements changed the game of WoW in many ways. Not only do they provide recognition for time and devotion put into the game, such as the Loremaster or Justicar achievements, but in Wrath content and beyond, they can actually change players’ approaches to game encounters. Consider the meta achievements for the Wrath raids. Who would have actually tried downing Sartharion with all three drakes alive if there had been no reward? Achievements prompt us to try more daring or difficult strategies for boss fights, do crazy or counterintuitive things in PvP combat, or run headlong into live mine fields. They also allow Blizzard developers to work in hard modes for certain bosses, giving them a scaling difficulty that provides accessibility for casual players and challenge for the hardcore.

So what about the vanilla and BC encounters? With a few notable exceptions, classic and Burning Crusade content has not received the achievement treatment.

If achievements had been part of WoW from the beginning, what would they have been like? Which crazy boss strategies deserved their own achievements in classic and BC encounters? Have you ever done something awesome in older content and thought, “Man, that should have been an achievement”?

The OverAchiever: A guide to basic archaeology and its achievements

Every Thursday, The Overachiever shows you how to work toward those sweet achievement points. This week, we start digging.

You guys remember the Dalaran fountain, right? I loved that thing. It was a wonderful, idiosyncratic little peek into the thoughts of an array of Azeroth’s lore figures, both the important and the obscure. It added a number of little touches to the game’s story that we never would have seen otherwise, and Blizzard even gave you an achievement for getting all the coins. I thought that whatever mad genius came up with the Dalaran fountain should have been chained to a desk at Blizzard and left there until he came up with more ideas like it.

Well, they can finally let that guy off the lead. Archaeology is kind of like the Dalaran fountain, except instead of being crammed into a tiny corner of Dalaran, it’s everywhere in the world, and instead of concerning 53 people who made wishes, it affords you a peek into seven civilizations and the world’s fossil record.

Pretty sweet, eh? Well, you’re going to have to work for it. If you’re completely new to archaeology, I’ve included a short set of instructions here, but otherwise, we’re going to head straight for the civilizations and achievements related to WoW‘s newest profession.
