Totem Talk: Restoration healing blues

Winged Ghostwolf

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for elemental, enhancement and restoration shaman. Want to be a sultan of swing healing? A champion of Chain Heal? Totem Talk: Restoration, brought to you by Joe Perez (otherwise known as Lodur from World of Matticus and co-host of the For the Lore and Raid Warning podcasts), shows you how.

While the last few articles have been focused on the upcoming patch 4.3, lately there’s been a new set of concerns that’s popped up regarding healers, mana and restoration shaman abilities.

The official forums are a place that is both infinitely scary and amazingly wonderful all at the same time. You’re as likely to find the next greatest bit of news as you are the next and most terrible meme. That said, I find myself on them more often than not, digging around for the latest news and concerns from other players or just for a laugh. This past week, though, a thread sprung up about healers going into the future, and our own Matt Low has covered it in his post from an all-healer perspective.

The thread has a number of blue responses and many of the answers directly relate to restoration shaman. Over this last week, I’ve received a number of emails about this thread and thought now would be a good time to go over it and address some concerns.

Patch 4.3 PTR: Play with and against the Blues in raids and PVP this week

Player vs. Blue? Player w. Blue? You choose! Sapperwix on the PTR forums has revealed two PTR events with the developers to take place this week. The PVP event will be today, Nov. 1, from 3 to 6 p.m. Pacific. The PVE event will feature developers queueing for the Deathwing raid using the Raid Finder and will take place on Friday, Nov. 4, also from 3 to 6 p.m. Pacific.

Developer tests like this are an excellent sign that Patch 4.3 is coming soon, so check out our previous coverage for more info. (For my money, I think Blizzard missed some excellent pun opportunities here. Red vs. Blue? Blue’s Queues? The possibilities are endless!)

See the full posts below.

Play against the Blues
Greetings All!

Tomorrow 11/01/11 the mightiest combatants of Blizzard will once again gallantly stride across the blood-soaked soil of Azeroth. That’s right, we’re doing a Play-with-the-Blues Battlegrounds event on the PTRs!

From 3:00pm-6:00pm PST we’ll be queuing for specific battlegrounds, be online and watch for the server alerts to know where to find us.

Hope to see you online!

Play with the Blues
After you’ve tested your mettle against us during the “Play AGAINST The Blues” event on Tuesday you can follow it up by joining us on the PTR in the fight against Deathwing and his minions!

On Friday 11/04/11 we’ll be online from 3:00pm-6:00pm PST and will be queuing up for Dragon’s Soul raids using the Looking For Raid tool. Queue up using the LFR tool to join us. You will know us by our guilds [Blizzard Horde] & [Blizzard Alliance].

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Review the official patch notes, and then dig into what’s ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing — from astride his back!

WoW Rookie: How to get by the summer blues

alliance flag mage

New around here? WoW Rookie has your back! Get all our collected tips, tricks and tactics for new players in the WoW Rookie Guide. WoW Rookie is about more than just being new to the game; it’s about checking out new classes, new playstyles, and new zones.

We’re in the full swing of summer, complete with the lurking shadow of a new school year that begins any time now. As guilds plunge headlong into the Firelands, raid rosters get tighter and tighter as faithful raid members eschew the game in favor of playing in the sun, having river shenanigans, and soaking up the heat before it’s gone for the year.

August and early September are frequently lulls for many players. This downpoint isn’t quite the same as “expansion blues,” since it’s a normal yearly phenomenon. After all, it’s awfully pretty outside; who wants to wipe on Rhyolith all night when you could be outside in the pool? While raid leaders yearn for their missing raid members, the players themselves struggle with balancing outside time and game playtime.

How can you manage to keep up with the game, even while the summer winds are beckoning you? Here are some tips.

The Care and Feeding of Warriors: The newly 85 warrior tank blues

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Care and Feeding of Warriors, the column dedicated to arms, fury and protection warriors. Despite repeated blows to the head from dragons, demons, Old Gods and whatever that thing over there was, Matthew Rossi will be your host.

Okay, so you leveled as protection. Let’s assume you intend to tank on said warrior. Since you’re now level 85, it follows that you should look up what the top raiding tanks are doing and do that, yes?

No.

Sweet candy-coated Garrosh clusters, no, you should not do that. Those guys are wearing gear you haven’t even started to collect and are in 10- or 25-man raids that are composed of some of the best players in the world. You’re just starting. You’re most likely going to be tanking in pickup groups where the other four players are complete strangers who neither know you nor care one whit about your gameplay. In some cases, sure, you’ll get a good group and everyone will work together and kill the monsters as a unit. That’s great.

I’m here to write columns to help you out, and frankly, you don’t need help with good groups. You need my help for the groups with the fury warrior in full Firelands gear who shows up in your heroic Deadmines run and does 28k DPS. (I said I was sorry.) You need my help for the ret paladin who doesn’t know what his interrupt is called (Rebuke) or the mage who won’t cast Polymorph because it’s just going to break anyway when he starts jumping around casting Arcane Explosion constantly for no reason.

This week, we’re going to talk about how to gear and play a tank starting out in normal level 85 instances and the first tier of Cataclysm heroics.

WoW Moviewatch: Battle of the Blues

Myndflame has created a fun, unique idea for getting official Blizzard posts out to the community. In Myndflame’s new series, the “insane voice actor” reads blue posts out loud. It’s a pretty great idea, in my opinion, since it brings a level of entertainment to what can sometimes be rather dry information.

The idea has really caught on, and even the community managers have gotten in on the fun. The result is that Myndflame took the recent Battle of the Blues and turned the banter into its own video.

This performance blew me away. It was hilarious. I’ve not laughed so hard at forum interaction since the last ret paladin nerf. The video isn’t long; take the time to check it out and enjoy the fun. For the record, that is exactly the way I’ve always imagined Neth and Zarhym speaking.

Make sure to keep checking out Myndflame for future installments. It’s definitely worth your time.

Around Azeroth: The post-patch blues

For someone wandering around in a sea of fire, this draenei lady looks pretty blasé. Is she burned out (pun intended) on the new Firelands comic? Perhaps she’s wearing all that fire resistance gear that everyone used to spend a ridiculous amount of time collecting for vanilla Molten Core. Or maybe the sparkle pony’s sparkles are actually refreshing peppermint cool burst flavor crystals! The world may never know. (Thanks to Bobbymcbob of Psychotic on Darkspear [US-A] for the sccreenshot.)

On the subject of blues and their forum communication, with love from Zarhym

The lack of direct interaction from Blizzard with the WoW community has been talked about a bit in the forums, comments, and blog posts around the ‘net lately, and we’re now seeing that it’s been a nagging issue for Blizzard as well.

Community Manager Zarhym posted last night, from home, a rather lengthy letter to the WoW world. It summed up nicely the different jobs of the community team at Blizzard and what their goals are. Zarhym also went a step further and said that they (the blues) haven’t been posting on the forums as much as they would like to and that they’re going to continue to improve their communication with the community.

It’s an interesting read and should be taken as welcome insight from someone at Blizzard who honestly cares about the community he services.

The entire post, after the break.

Blues explain nature of archaeology cooldowns

Several players and Community Manager Lylirra shared some discussion today on the official World of Warcraft forums about the cooldowns of novelty items crafted through the archaeology profession.

In the thread, the original poster suggested that the cooldowns of certain novelty items were too long in comparison to others and that Blizzard should consider fixing the discrepancies. The poster used Pendant of the Scarab Storm and Bones of Transformation as an example, noting that both items have a vanity effect that lasts 20 seconds but a cooldown difference of 90 minutes.

Lylirra responded, explaining that the cooldowns, though seemingly random, were chosen with specific issues in mind. She explains that with the Pendant of the Scarab Storm specifically, developers were concerned that the item’s effect might strain certain players’ computers.

Archaeology Items’ Cooldowns
The current cooldown was chosen deliberately, but I can see why you might think otherwise (100 minutes is kind of strange for a cooldown time).

Anyway, summoning a harem of scarabs can be pretty taxing on some systems, so there were some initial concerns about putting the pendant on a short cooldown. Based on the feedback we’ve received, though, we’re looking into reducing it. We agree that the effect is pretty cool and would be nice to use it more frequently.

Personally, a little lore logic behind the items might be nice as well. How is it that my character can summon a god every 3 minutes, but it takes 10 minutes to round up some sassy dwarven ladies?
