Breakfast Topic: Who should play your character in the WoW movie?

Deborah Ann Woll

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

As we all know, there’s the distinct possibility of a World of Warcraft movie some time in the (relatively) near future. Some people are skeptical, some optimistic. Hopefully, it will be an epic tale, full of the flavor and excitement we all feel every time we log in to Azeroth, not a rehashing of stories we’ve known for ages or a bastardization of the hobby we all enjoy so much. Whether it focuses on Horde or Alliance, there will need to be characters of various shapes and sizes, representing the varied peoples of the World of Warcraft. Gnomes, Humans, Trolls and Tauren, the movie presents the opportunity to show the fantasy genre on a scope unseen thus far.

So who would you cast to play your character? Who brings the smarmy wit of the wily rogue, the cold confidence of the devious warlock or the young but arrogant sneer of the proud paladin on your character selection screen?

Since I get first dibs, as the author of this, I’m going to go ahead and stake my claim. My Human protection warrior would be played by Deborah Ann Woll from True Blood. She brings just the right mix of strength, sexiness, and wide-eyed bewilderment to play my common Stormwind girl-gone-heroine.

New character models are in the works

One of the most interesting tidbits dropped during the World of Warcraft Open Q&A is a note concerning new character models for the game’s older races. If you’ve played the game for any length of time, it’s instantly obvious that not all character models are created equal, and the game’s earliest races are in a pretty sorry state in comparison to their later counterparts. As we learned in the art panel, the male pandaren has 10 times the number of digital “bones” possessed by the game’s older races, allowing them an unprecedented number of fluid and dynamic animations. As Milka, one of our commenters, just noted, “I heard that they’re creating animated belts. My troll woman still can’t blink. Result: My belt will be more expressive than my face.”

Players have been asking for updates to older races as a result, and developers have confirmed that they are in the works and being actively designed by the character artists. However, they don’t want to put something in the game that feels like a betrayal to a character that you’ve had for years, so they’re proceeding carefully. There’s no word yet on when we can expect to see them, but it’s good news for everyone who’d like their older toons to look as good as their newer ones!

Edit: Zarhym has just posted on the forums clarifying the information given at BlizzCon, although there’s no new information to share.

The news is out — we’ll be playing Mists of Pandaria! Find out what’s in store with an all-new talent system, peek over our shoulder at our Pandaren hands-on, and get ready to battle your companion pets against others. It’s all here right at WoW Insider!

Free character transfers open from Outland-EU to select EU realms

If you’re on the Outland (EU) realm, you’re in luck! Blizzard’s Vaneras has announced in a blue post today that free character transfers have been opened from Outland to Agamaggan, Burning Steppes, and Vashj.

According to Warcraft Realms, all three destination realms are very lightly populated, which is likely the rationale behind this offer. Transfers will only be available until Oct. 18, so if you need a fresh start, now’s your chance!

Free Character Migration (FCM)
The below FCM is available until October 18 2011. The migrations are open to both factions:

From: Outland
To: Agamaggan
To: Burning Steppes
To: Vashj

Breakfast Topic: How many rolls did it take to get your character right?

Character selection screen

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

A lot of players took a few swings to get their characters right. You might find that that first mage you rolled doesn’t really synch with your desire to stab an Ogre with that sword. That Human might have been a bit bland for a game where you could be a goat with face tentacles from space, or a walking slab of USDA-approved beef. I know several people who started playing at the bequest of their friends, made a character, leveled it for a while, only to get the message: “I’m sorry, but your friends are on another server!” It can be a bit jarring, especially if you’ve leveled into the 40s or 50s when a sizable time investment has been made, but perhaps not enough to justify paying for a server or faction transfer. Mistaken class choices can only be rerolled.

I lucked out. My friend who got me into WoW told me exactly which server and faction to start on before I downloaded the trial account. I picked a Human paladin because I loved paladins in Diablo 2 and started on my voyage. The ability to tank fed into my natural tendency to melee things, and sword and shield has always been my favorite aesthetic weapon choice. Others in my guild were less fortunate. Our mage, who played a paladin in beta, rolled a paladin on live servers, only to find that it was completely different than the class he fell in love with in the beta test. He traipsed through a rogue, priest, and hunter before he got around to maining his mage. Our Draenei enhance shaman started out as a Blood Elf paladin who didn’t make it past level 40.

How about you? Is your main your first toon?

Breakfast Topic: Where do you want your character to die?

Mankrik's wife

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

Everybody knows that everybody dies, and nobody knows it more than us. Our characters have gone through so many world-changing events, from the opening of Ahn’Qiraj’s gates to the death of the Lich King to surviving the world breaker himself. But we have seen in game that not everyone can make it though this world alive — Cairne Bloodhoof and Magni Bronzebeard, just to name a few.

But if you ever needed to have your avatar lay down his or her weapon for the last time, where should it be? Would you want to die at the infamous Wrathgate, or would you be one of the many nameless killed in the cataclysm — or would you just have your character pass on in a quiet inn after leaving an eventful and adventurous life?

The Daily Quest: Getting into character

WoW Insider’s on a Daily Quest to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.

I like roleplaying; it’s why I write a column on the process. It’s a little bit creative writing, a little bit improvisational acting, and a little bit of the lore that I love, all wrapped up in a tidy package. I sometimes wonder about those who criticize RP and whether or not they actually understand what it’s about, though. If you’ve ever read and enjoyed a novel, what you’re seeing with roleplay is a giant, interactive novel with many authors who write the story as they go along. Sound fun? It is!

Today we’ve got a few posts from around the blogosphere concerning the subject of roleplay.

Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our WoW Resources Guide for more WoW-related sites.

WoW Rookie: How to look up your character online

New around here? WoW Rookie has your back! Get all our collected tips, tricks and tactics for new players in the WoW Rookie Guide. WoW Rookie is about more than just being new to the game; it’s about checking out new classes, new playstyles, and new zones.

If you’re anything like me, you like to take a moment here and there to check out your character online without actually logging into the game. Maybe you’re on a break at work, just doing background research into gear, or otherwise just goofing off on a computer. Essentially, you’d like to look at your character without getting in the middle of the game.

The Armory was a common way to share information about your character with other people. All of your official forum posts link automatically to your Armory profile, and it’s easy to post to a link to your Armory on unofficial forums and emails. Over its existence, the Armory has continued to become more powerful. It can help you find potential upgrades, find out where gear dropped, and more. Along the way, of course, the Armory also became more complicated.

While Blizzard is transitioning away from the classic Armory, most of the functionality still exists just fine on the Battle.net WoW site. Here’s a walk-through of some basic things you can use the Battle.net Armory to do.

Breakfast Topic: What WoW character would you like to have coffee with?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

Ner’zhul. Medivh. Zul’jin. Uther the Lightbringer. Malygos. Aegwynn. King Terenas Menethil II. Archimonde. Rend Blackhand. Kel’Thuzad. Grom Hellscream. Alleria Windrunner. Illidan Stormrage. Lady Vashj. Gul’dan. Sir Anduin Lothar. Dagran Thaurissan. Archmage Antonidas. Turalyon. Orgrim Doomhammer.

These and many other legendary characters played major roles in shaping the Azeroth we know today. Some were heroes, championing their causes with honor, courage, and compassion. Others were villains, sowing seeds of pain, destruction, and chaos. Still others were merely bystanders or victims, caught beside or within the crossfire of the world’s many wars. Each met their end, some too soon, others far too late.

We know their stories as history tells them… but what of the personal tale? What of the man or woman behind the legend? We have little to nothing recorded on the thoughts of these influential leaders, murderers, thinkers, and watchers. What if we could obtain an autobiographical account firsthand? What if we could meet with one of these titanic figures and hear his side of the story?

Ruling out the fact that some characters refuse to stay dead (Kael’thas Sunstrider, I’m looking at you), and assuming the nastier villains wouldn’t kill you on sight (perhaps we’ll host the event in a neutral city like Shattrath), which deceased figure from Warcraft history would you sit down for a cup of Blended Bean Brew with? What would you ask him?
