Around Azeroth: You got bones in your closet

Blood elf hunter Akussa of Draka (US-H) writes, “I was exploring the nooks and crannies of Vashj’ir several nights ago. As I was swimming around the Abandoned Reef in the Abyssal Depths, idly looking for Ghostcrawler, curiosity grabbed me and I started playing with my Eagle Eye spell to see what was over the side of Vashj’ir as it vanishes into the dark, foreboding depths. Normally attempting to swim down there would kill you, but I was able to chain hop my Eagle Eye around, and while doing so I happened upon this small graveyard of skeletons and their bizarre little glowing pearl. I spent a good while looking around, fascinated by what it could possibly be and why a dev put it way out in the middle of nowhere.”

Breakfast Topic: Are you a closet roleplayer?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

Most players don’t actively roleplay in World of Warcraft — however, it sure seems like some people do without realizing it. Tabards, when not being used for reputations, are usually picked for cosmetic reasons, as are mounts and non-combat pets. Faction loyalty can be seen as another type of roleplaying. A lot of people seem to hate Garrosh, even though his character doesn’t actively affect raiding or PVP.

Personally, I like to think about what my character would think of things. I might not roleplay in game, but I know his political opinions. I’ve created some backstory for why he feels the way he does and why he became his class. After seeing his mother die, he knew he had to be a healer, and the priesthood seemed the best choice for someone distancing himself from the more barbaric ways of the Darkspear. There are even some quests I’ve completed that I’ve felt my character, story-wise, would never have actually done (such as killing Alliance members without provocation). Despite these tendencies, I don’t actually engage in any roleplaying in the game.

Do you ever do any kind of roleplaying, even if it’s in your head? Have you thought about your character’s personality or history? Do you ever think about how your character feels about the various faction leaders and the recent changes in power?

Breakfast Topic: Are you a closet nerd or a flag-waving nerd?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW.com.

We all know about the idea of the overweight, basement-dwelling virgin, the idea that gamers and comic book nerds all look like the comic book guy from The Simpsons. Many of us know that is not the case. You even see people in trade chat calling each other “nerds” and “virgins,” although the inevitable response of calling someone else a nerd in WoW is laughable. In my guild alone, we have a lawyer, an author and a chef, along with many happily married people with children. Some are openly proud of their nerdiness; some try to argue they aren’t nerds over Vent.

My girlfriend hides her geek from a lot of her friends. She watches anime, is a gamer and even dresses up for our local comic book convention, but many of her friends and work associates have no idea about this side of her. Me, on the other hand — I let the geek flag fly. I wear my gamer T-shirts. I talk openly about WoW and other games with my friends. I still complain about the fact Firefly never got a second season.
