WoW Moviewatch: Sex, Moonkinology and Space Culture: Fear & Loathing in Moonglade

The good Baron Soosdon describes this video as a scientific reproduction of what you feel being hit by Moonfire. Instead of a few seconds of analysis, however, Soosdon provides a long, 7-minute review of the strobing, painful experience.

There’s no sex in Sex, Moonkinology and Space Culture: Fear & Loathing in Moonglade. It’s a long, trippy right through Moonglade and elven forests, completely with dancing Moonkin and spectacular colors. This video should be avoided by those with epilepsy. Everyone else with an appreciation for Soosdon’s unique and powerful style should click right away and go for an amazing ride.

Low Culture: Lose yourself in the wild possibilities of Skyrim
Johns Hopkins News-Letter
I'm pretty sure I haven't racked hours like these since World of Warcraft, but the bigger point is that I have racked hours like these. And the question is why. It's not the first video game I've ever been immersed so deeply in.

All the World’s a Stage: Pop culture and its impact on roleplay

My original title for this post was going to be “You got your pop culture in my roleplay!” “No, you got your roleplay in my pop culture!” But that doesn’t fit, and it isn’t a very descriptive title. Still, this issue of “how many cultural reference is okay in game” is an argument I see come up in roleplay alot. WoW, tabletop, and LARP all seem equally plagued by it.

My example is, of course, the above video. It’s not a WoW roleplay thing, but it’s still a pretty good illustration of my point. The LARPer is taking the part of Baron Samedi, who is attempting to convert some snake-worshipping vampires to his own religion. I don’t know enough about the game dynamic to evaluate it on anything except the obvious; the video’s creator is performng a parody of the Old Spice commercials in a very in-character manner. (Thanks to OWbN for the example.) In my opinion, the creator did a pretty good imitation of the vocals, and mirrored the Old Spice commercials pretty well.

With the technical evaluation out of the way, we’re left to wonder if it makes sense that an ancient vampire god really spends that much time cruising YouTube. But on the other hand, the video’s kind of funny, and probably some people had fun with it. Isn’t that kind of the point of roleplay?

15 Minutes of Fame: Anthropologist Bonnie Nardi on WoW culture and art

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own 15 Minutes of Fame.

We’ve written before at WoW.com and even here in 15 Minutes of Fame about attempts to study World of Warcraft culture from a sociological, psychological or anthropological point of view. In all of these cases, the researchers in question have logged time playing WoW as part of their research, albeit some with greater degrees of immersive success than others.

So I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that Bonnie Nardi, a University of California-Irvine expert in the social implications of digital technologies and author of the rather blithely titled My Life as a Night Elf Priest, not only rolled the token raiding character in order to observe the curious behavior of the raiding animal — she actually enjoys WoW in its own right. Rather than cautiously sniffing WoW culture only to generate another wide-eyed, ZOMG-look-at-this-funny-lingo report from the digital field, Nardi dove deep enough to play in four different guilds: a casual raiding guild; a raiding guild composed of fellow academics; a small, casual guild; and her own friends-and-family guild. Our two-part interview with Nardi, packed with opinion and cultural analysis, reveals a witty approach to WoW culture that successfully combines academic insight with the familiarity of a seasoned player.
