Blizzard’s APIs and You: Cool information and tools coming down the pipe

Recently, Blizzard disabled the WoWArmory Facebook application, signaling that the time of the modern WoW Armory is over and we will soon live in an age when new Blizzard APIs will transform our out-of-game experience. And change it, they will. These forthcoming APIs will change the way you interact with WoW outside of the game in ways you cannot even think up yet. How do I know this? That’s the power of information facilitation, and some inventive hypotheticals will show you what Blizzard’s APIs will do for you in the near future.
Over the past few months, Blizzard has been preparing to roll out a new set of APIs that will take internal information from the Armory, the new community site, and more, parse it into easily manageable data streams, and make those streams available to application developers. With these new streams of information, savvy developers can craft web applications, smartphone apps, social media plugins, and anything else under the sun to provide you with new and dynamic WoW experiences on the internet. I know that sounds horribly cliché, but hear me out — this stuff is pretty cool, and the back end could bring about a new standard for information availability and MMOs.
I’m not a developer. In fact, a lot of us in the community are not developers. Writing this story felt like an exercise in obscurity because, frankly, all this back end information isn’t in my wheelhouse. As I dug deeper and began to realize the potential of the systems being set up, I fell in love with the idea that Blizzard is opening up easy access to so much information. I thought it would be a good idea to illustrate for those of us who have no idea what APIs are capable of, to break through the programmer/developer talk and discuss what these APIs mean for us, at the end of the day.

Around Azeroth: Phoenix down
Did you think that garish pink songbird hanging around Tempest Keep was the best phoenix that Warcraft could create? This giant firebird laughs at your presumption. Then it incinerates your Google Map printout of the directions to its lair. (Thanks to Nubeushagrid of TokEez on Scilla [US-A] for the screenshot.)

Around Azeroth: Mow ‘em down
Our mounts are pretty amazing things. They can fit in our invisible backpacks, appear out of thin air at a moment’s notice, and fly for hours with no rest. But they do need to eat, and when a dragon sits down for a meal, it thinks big — even if there are no giant boars available for dinner. Vioala of Strike on Fenris (US-A) sacrificed an entire field of corn to feed her drake, who has luckily adjusted well to an omnivorous diet.

Breakfast Topic: Getting a certain achievement down
This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.
Whatever goes up must come down, right?
That isn’t always the case in WoW. Between islands in the sky in Outland, a floating city in Northrend, and many other places from which to fall to your doom, WoW has many manifestations of gravity and its effects on your character. In the realm of gravity-based achievements, there is Going Down.
Most achievements offer just one way to earn them; either you have killed the Lich King, gone Insane In The Membrane, or killed enough turkeys, or you have not. There is just one way to get each of those achievements. But of all the achievements available in WoW, few have as many ways to earn it as Going Down.
Just survive a 60-foot fall.

Encrypted Text: Breaking down tier 12

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. This week, we’ll be discussing the upcoming patch 4.2 and our new tier set. Feel free to email me with any article suggestions or feedback!
In case you haven’t heard, the upcoming patch 4.2 is currently on the PTR. The patch notes currently include a ton of important rogue changes. First of all, Blind is getting buffed. In PvE situations, it will now last up to a minute. Also, Blizzard is unbuffing Stealth for rogues a bit, as Stealth will start its cooldown upon leaving Stealth, not entering it. I had always assumed that was an unintentional change, anyway. In addition, most crowd control abilities are going to be just like Sap, so that the casters can use them without pulling aggro. Like I said, there’s a ton of major changes coming for the rogue class!
In all seriousness, I am a bit cheesed off that we didn’t see any damage improvements with the patch. You’ve all heard my spiel about how rogues are the only pure melee DPS class and how that necessitates our having higher DPS than anyone else. Rogues are very “middle of the pack” right now, with the abominable hunters and warriors typically surpassing us in equal gear. In particular, our effectiveness drops sharply in heroic raids, where it can be downright dangerous to be in melee range. Either way, our raids need someone soak up all the rogue gear, so an analysis of the upcoming rogue tier 12 set is in order.

Spiritual Guidance: Breaking down the shadow priest tier 12 bonuses

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. Every Wednesday, shadow priesting expert Fox Van Allen rains sheer purple destruction down on all who oppose him. In stereo, where available.
Historically, tier bonuses for shadow priests have been pretty boring. From tier 4 onward, we’ve had very little to look forward to beyond mana cost reductions, spell-specific damage increases, and extended spell durations. These bonuses were valuable, to be sure — we could all benefit from an extra DOT tick — but nothing was game-changing.
Towards the end of Wrath of the Lich King, though, things began to change. The tier 10 four-piece shadow priest bonus, a .5-second reduction to the Mind Flay channel, was a literal game-changer. It put Mind Blast on the back burner. Some shadow priests only cast it to refresh Replenishment; others dropped it from their rotations entirely. Whether or not the tier 10 bonus was a positive thing from a gameplay perspective is debatable, but there’s no debating what a powerful force it was.
Now, after a relatively tame set of tier 11 bonuses to start off Cataclysm (damage increases — oh boy!), game developers are dropping a pair of nuclear bombs on us. The tier 12 bonuses for shadow priests are compelling, controversial, and game-changing — all at the same time.
