Encrypted Text: Even rogues have homework

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Feel free to email me with any screenshots you’d like to see featured here or any questions you might have!

I hate homework. When I was in school, I was always finding creative ways to turn my assignments in as late as possible. I completed most my English assignments the night before they were due, and I’ve solved a few calculus questions in the car on my way to class. No matter how important the assignment was, there was always something more interesting that I would rather do. When it comes down to a heads-up match between playing Warcraft 2 and studying biology flashcards, there’s really no contest.

Playing a rogue successfully in the endgame of World of Warcraft requires a lot of homework. We’ve talked before about the very math-centric natures of rogue theorycrafting. Without a spreadsheet or other mathematical tool, it’s almost impossible to create a working model for testing DPS and checking gear. Boss abilities are constantly changing and being added, and they often interact with our abilities in non-standard ways. Blizzard’s developers are implementing fixes on a daily basis. In order to keep up with the pace of WoW‘s development, you simply have to do your homework.

The Queue: Even though I am better than you, I am not

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mike Sacco will be your host today.

Video mildly NSFW. I learned something yesterday, and that’s that the number of people who will jump to correct a “grammar mistake” is larger than the number of people who will recognize and enjoy a combination JFK reference/play on words. I thought we had moved beyond just using pictures of our pets for Queue intros! My heart is broken.

Aarkan asked:

Why does my worgen bear have leg spikes?

Because the GWAR logo is trademarked.

The Lawbringer: What does B(viii) even mean anymore?

Pop law abounds in The Lawbringer, your weekly dose of WoW, the law, video games and the MMO genre. Running parallel to the games we love and enjoy is a world full of rules, regulations, pitfalls and traps. How about you hang out with us as we discuss some of the more esoteric aspects of the games we love to play?

Part B, section viii of the World of Warcraft Terms of Use state that players are not allowed to communicate directly with players who are playing characters aligned with the opposite faction. This makes sense for a game that has a heavy faction-based player versus player system, as well as a comprehensive achievement system with numerous milestones based on interaction with the opposing faction. However, over time, Blizzard’s own actions and the ever-evolving customs of the community have made B(viii) something of a mystery. We communicate with the opposing faction moreso than ever today, in game and out. And while the Terms of Use makes the point that this communication is in-game only, one has to wonder where the forums and the player collusion that goes on there fits into Blizzard’s understanding of cross-faction communication.

This week, The Lawbringer is all about player communication and, in light of B(viii), some issues regarding how such communications between the Horde and Alliance have either gone completely unnoticed, not cared for, or are even necessary and tolerated by Blizzard. At the end of the day, I’d like to find out for myself what B(viii) really means, and what something like Tol Barad win-trading does in the face of such a provision in the Terms of Use.

Cataclysm: Gamon, legendary villain of Orgrimmar, made even more elite

I am Foxlight, legendary hero of the masses. This is Orgrimmar. My city.

I must be out there in the night, staying vigilant. Wherever the darkness stirs, I will be there. Wherever an inn is threatened, I will be there. Wherever a rogue needs to finish a quest, I will be there. Lurking. Watching.

For at any moment, I know the foul villain Gamon may return to threaten my people.

Years ago, Gamon posed no threat — a simple two-bit crook; a level 12 drunkard. Gamon bided his time in the Valley of Strength’s inn (specifically, dead on the inn’s floor). Many ignored him. But those of us, those of us with a sixth sense … we knew that he needed to be stopped before it was too late.

They laughed at me. Called me a fool. Stopped me from doing what must be done.

And so, sinister Gamon obtained the legendary Tazan’s Key. And before they could stop him, dark, foul Gamon unlocked the secrets of Tazan’s Satchel, accessing the dark magicks inside. The once quiet Gamon is now … a level 85 elite. And despite his quiet manner, he threatens the very safety of not just low-level rogues trying to finish a quest, but the entire world. A cunning villain, he still resists the urge to attack unless he is attacked first. But even so, his kill count is rising. He must be stopped.

I don’t eat. I don’t sleep. I keep watch over the Valley of Strength’s inn, making sure Gamon stays dead on the inn’s floor. The needs of the world outweigh the needs of the level 10 rogue trying to complete a quest.

I am Foxlight. And Gamon … I will destroy you. Over and over again, every five minutes, until you stop respawning.

Sunday Morning Funnies: Even the sticker is shoddy

Comic News: Out of World announced that there will now be a comic released each week, rather than 3 times per month. It has also been seriously suggested that The Adventures of Disgraph T. Dwarf will be back soon! Unfortunately, I do not have the date yet. You guys should also take another look at the SMF Gallery Guide; WoW, eh?’s artwork has been updated to show a custom piece!

Last, but certainly not least, Kelly Aaron’s, and WoW.com‘s, Byron, the Tauren Rogue, has debuted its finale.

15 Minutes of Fame: Even geeks get chic with Geek Chic Cosmetics

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own 15 Minutes of Fame.

It was only a matter of time before some entrepreneurial spirit noticed that geeks and gamers wear makeup, too. Enter Geek Chic Cosmetics, a growing cosmetics lined based on natural ingredients and made for geeks and gamers, by geeks and gamers. Creators Chantel Eldredge and Deborah Margarella have both been WoW geeks since vanilla — long enough to make a WoW-themed set of eye shadows seem like a given. “It seemed only natural to base them off the class colors,” Eldredge notes. “We hope others dig them as much as we do.” We do — and we’re so enthusiastic that we’re giving away several sets. Make sure to visit our giveaway post for your chance to win a full 10-Man Raid eyeshadow set from Geek Chic.

15 Minutes of Fame: How did a love of gaming and geekery lead to cosmetics, of all things?

Chantel Eldredge: Geek Chic Cosmetics was an idea born from both my and Deborah’s mutual love of makeup and gaming. We both were introduced to gaming at very young ages, and it has been a lifelong passion for both of us.

The birth of Geek Chic is a result of a conversation we had one night shortly after I quit my job at a large, chain crafts store. Deborah is a college student with little time to spare, and I hadn’t had very good luck in finding anything in the job market where I live. It just clicked. I was talking about this idea I have had for a little over a year about wanting to make my own makeup and how I thought it would be cool to make makeup that payed homage to all things geeky. She looked at me and said, “Let’s just do it.” If it weren’t for her tenacity and willingness to hop right in and make it happen, I don’t know that I would have had the courage to do so by myself.
