Why Freemium Is Right for 'Microsoft Flight'
PCWorld Blizzard's even retrofitted World of Warcraft with a free-to-play option. This is how Microsoft's hoping to pay the bills and keep the game relevant without abandoning its original core audience (again, presumably — we'll see how well things scale up … Microsoft Flight simulator goes free to play with in-game purchases Microsoft Flight Goes Free-To-Play – Landing in Autumn |

Around Azeroth: Flight of the bunny woman
Maginofin of Victory Call on Trollbane (EU-A) knows you only have one chance to make a first impression. So when she finally completed her Dragonwrath quest line, she decided to show off for all of Stormwind, riding into the city with her bunny ears and Christmas bikini. Hey, if everyone’s got their eyes on you, why not make a splash?

Around Azeroth: A flight to remember
“This is why you don’t let the moonkin ride your tank,” writes submitter Donald. “Poor Detriment of Monolith on Icecrown (US-H) threw out his back trying to carry fat ol’ Donhorn right before the raid. Let this be a warning to you all!” Well, any blood elf who’s dumb enough to try to hoist a full-grown tauren on his shoulders deserves whatever happens to him. Plate armor does not count as an exoskeleton!

Breakfast Topic: Has flight ruined the adventure?

I have very strong opinions about video games. Even when I love a game with all of my heart (like WoW), I still enjoy discussing the little things I think could have been handled differently and arguing them with absolute brutality. Matthew Rossi and I spend hours debating game design every day. Every single day.
My latest pet topic is flying mounts in World of Warcraft. Personally, I think flying mounts removed most of the feeling of adventure, danger, and discovery in WoW. Once you’re able to jump on your first flying mount, the dangers of the world are no longer an issue. You no don’t have to stop for a moment to figure out how to scale rough terrain. The world doesn’t hold secrets from you anymore, unless they’re hidden indoors or underground — you can merely mount up and fly to anything in the world. If you wanted to, you could fly from one end of Twilight Highlands to the other and see everything the landscape has to offer with no effort whatsoever.
It doesn’t matter how intimidating and oppressive Blizzard’s artists and designers make the terrain of a zone. It’s a distant, fleeting threat. You can essentially remove yourself from the world with the click of a button. Fly high enough into the sky, and you can close yourself off from all of Azeroth. I don’t hate flying mounts; I actually quite enjoy riding a bone dragon. I just think that there was a lot lost in the process of integrating flight.
I would like to take this topic to you, dear readers. Do you think flying mounts have taken the adventure and discovery out of Warcraft? If so, how do you think it could be fixed? Do you like things just as they are?

Troll druids get unique bat flight form

Troll druids just went from best druids to the best druids, as their unique flight form has been revealed — a bat with tiki shoulders wearing an awesome mojo necklace. Check out a high-res picture over at MMO Champion. The video is after the jump.

Worgen druid flight form video from Wowhead
Well, what do you know! We figured that worgen and troll druids would just get recolors of existing druid flight forms, but it looks like we were wrong. The latest Cataclysm beta patch added a brand-new Swift Flight Form model for worgen druids, so it’s safe to assume that trolls will have one soon as well.
I’m liking the Gilnean flag on the back of the form, as well as the serrated beak and big feathery mane. Wonder what kinds of touches the troll form will get? Guess we’ll have to wait and see! And hey, maybe this means we’ll see new moonkin forms too. A dog can dream.

Around Azeroth: Flight school
OK, little dudes, your mom hired me to give you flying lessons so that you can have a chance of getting off this godforsaken frozen rock. So the first thing you have to do is spread your wings. No, further. You call those wings? Well, we’ll work with what we have. Now you just have to learn the way my mom taught me. Run … or waddle, whatever … to the edge of the glacier, spread your wings, close your eyes and jump! You’ll never learn if you don’t do it. There we go! Dudes! Dudes? Where’d you go? Why is there only an orca down there licking his lips? Oh, man, I better get out of here before the cops come. (Thanks to Greyarea of <Pendulum> on Maiev [US-H] for the screenshot.)

Know Your Lore: Taking flight with the Wildhammer

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.
The dwarves of Warcraft are an interesting bunch of characters — though they haven’t had much “screen time” in World of Warcraft, over the course of the expansions we’ve seen more focus on this odd race and its mysterious origins. Rather than evolving or being created as a natural being like the trolls or the tauren, the dwarves were originally a race called the earthen, created by the Titans with the specific purpose of shaping and documenting the progress of the world of Azeroth.
The earthen were quite literally of the earth. Created from the stone and earth of the planet they watched over, these creatures shared a deep connection with the world itself. Each movement of the ground, every earthquake or natural disaster was felt by the earthen and affected them in a profound way. The explosion from the Sundering — the destruction of the Well of Eternity which caused the continent of Kalimdor to split into the continents we know today — affected the earthen deeply, and many retreated to the safety of the Titan cities from which they had originated after the explosion.
WARNING: The following post contains some spoilers for the upcoming Cataclysm expansion. If you wish to remain spoiler free, do not continue.
