Joystiq So with the world coming to an end, what else do we have to look forward to other than a new World of Warcraft expansion? Well, Diablo 3, I guess, but we all know that's not going to release before Armageddon (they're claiming Q2, which we all know is … |

Breakfast Topic: Back to the future or forward to the past?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.
More and more patch 4.3 news has been emerging in recent weeks, and it’s looking like the new dungeons and raid in patch 4.3 will all be Caverns of Time instances. One intriguing twist is that the first of the three new dungeons will actually bring players to a time in the future. Though the news sounds great, I for one do not expect that the new 4.3 PVE content will exhaust the concept behind CoT. The notion of traveling backward or forward in time to witness — and perhaps even influence — an epic event in the story of WoW has the potential to breed an endless number of exiting possibilities.
A CoT instance I would like to see in the future is a visit to the past conflict between the Eredar who joined up with the Burning Legion and the Eredar who fled with the help of the Naaru (aka the Draenei). There hasn’t been much Draenei lore or story development since The Burning Crusade, so I think an Eredar-themed CoT venture would be welcome (and for once, my Draenei shaman wouldn’t have to disguise himself as a Human). Perhaps players could be brought back to the eredar homeworld Argus to assist Velen and the Draenei as they attempt to escape from Archimonde, Kil’Jaeden and the demon-corrupted Eredar. If Sargeras is involved in the next expansion, perhaps the trip back to the time at which he recruited the Eredar could be part of an attempt to weaken or destroy him.
What Caverns of Time dungeons or raids do you hope to see developed in WoW? Would you rather go back to an historic moment in the past or forward to some key event in the future?

Shifting Perspectives: Moonkin abilities to look forward to in the next expansion

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Shifting Perspectives for cat , bear , restoration and balance druids. Balance news comes at you every Friday — learn how to master the forces of nature, and know what it means to be a giant laser turkey! Send questions, comments, or something you’d like to see to tyler@wowinsider.com.
Once again, we’re in another slow patch week. Oh, sure, there’ve been some good developments in regards to enchanting and alchemy, but nothing that really impacts balance druids (or any class) as a whole. If you’re of those professions, grats on your gains, minor as they may be, but really it’s all inconsequential. Oh yes, and there’s some deal about Hurricane getting a new animation; it’s pretty cool, if only I used the spell with any frequency.
With that aside, it’s time to get serious about looking into the next expansion. Although we still have a raid to go in this one, we all know that Blizzard will be announcing plans for the next expansion at BlizzCon next week, and it’s never too early to look ahead. That in mind, we’ll be spending our time looking at things that balance druids lack. Getting new abilities is a mainstay of every expansion, and we all know that this is quickly becoming a touch-and-go endeavor; characters can only hold so many abilities. Given that, let’s look at what it is balance druids are currently missing from their tool set, those abilities we could use to really flesh out our gameplay.

The Daily Quest: Looking forward, looking back

Around this time last year, I was working on Icecrown Citadel and looking forward to Cataclysm. The year before that, I was taking my first steps in a new raid guild as we worked on Ulduar and Trial of the Crusader. The year before that, I was clearing Black Temple. It gets fuzzier as I go back in time, but I do have hundreds of fond memories, and I wonder — what am I going to be doing a year from now?
Today, we’ve got a few posts from around the blogosphere looking ahead at future content and one fond look at where we’ve been before.
- MMO Melting Pot looks at the potential ups and downs of the upcoming Deathwing raid.
- Dwarven Battle Medic shares some thoughts on the upcoming content in patch 4.3.
- Priest With A Cause has been imagining what the new raid finder will look like.
- Manalicious takes a trip down memory lane with another look at The Burning Crusade.

Spiritual Guidance: Shadow priests react to patch 4.1, look forward to 4.2

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. Every Wednesday, shadow priesting expert Fox Van Allen takes you down the only road he’s ever been down. You know, the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah.
Shortly after patch 4.1 went live last Tuesday, I got the chance to raid Bastion of Twilight. I tried out Mind Sear on the first pull, and the numbers were absolutely luscious. Instead of weak, ugly, sub-2,000 ticks, I was seeing ticks twice that size. Before long, I was gaming my trash rotations, trying to proc Empowered Shadow and keep it up through the pulls. It was terrific practice for Cho’gall — I finally felt like my AoE was making an impact on that encounter.
Overall, I got praise for the improved numbers I was putting out (thanks, Mind Sear!). But that praise got me thinking — how is the rest of the shadow priest community faring in the post-4.1 world? And with patch 4.2 around the corner … is there anything about shadow priests that Blizzard still needs to fix?

Patch 4.1 PTR: The story moves forward

Patch 4.1 offers us more than the return of a couple of awesome old raids as new 5-man instances, we also have a host of new phased content to consider. Over at MMO-Champion, there are some interesting tidbits that have been datamined for our consideration. What are they, you ask? I’m glad you did.
In addition to various clues about the new instances and what they might contain, we’re also treated to a list of various phased events. Someone named Tarecgosa will be involved in events at Coldarra (we have some sort of intro hinted at twice), which could mean the Blue Flight is finally getting ready to pick a new leader. Meanwhile, the Firelands opens up with new dailies, and Anachronos finally decides it is his time to return to the Caverns of Time, perhaps opening up the War of the Ancients raid we’ve been teased about.
It definitely looks like the Cataclysm is kicking it up a notch in patch 4.1, but much remains to be answered. Why are ZG and ZA making a return now? Are we finally going to find out what Hakkar the Soulflayer has to do with Hakkar the Houndmaster? (I ask this because if ZG is back at the same time that we’re being sent back to the War of the Ancients; that’s a big coincidence.) Will we finally get to see Neltharion’s fall into madness and transformation into Deathwing? This should all be very interesting.

Breakfast Topic: What are you looking forward to in patch 4.0.6?

Don’t look at me like that.
What are you looking forward to in patch 4.0.6? Any profession changes that strike your fancy, or are the class changes things you’ve been looking forward to seeing? Are there any dungeons changes you’re silently thanking the Blizzard devs for finally addressing?

Breakfast Topic: Looking forward to 2011

2011 promises to be a huge, landmark year in World of Warcraft and most likely Blizzard in general. As the new year turns the corner, I am happy to look ahead, make a prediction or two, and tell you about where my excitement lies. It’s going to be a banner year in Azeroth — I can feel it.
This year, I can finally raid the way I want to raid and not be forced into running the same raid instances multiple times in order to feel like I’ve completed enough. The split between 10-man and 25-man raids is slowly going away, turning raid size into a choice that has little to no impact on the achievements or gear you can receive. In 2011, you’ll see either the implementation of or the mentioning of the new legendary weapon, which will be found in both 10-man and 25-man raid instances.
I am very much looking forward to the first big content patch of Cataclysm, which I’m guessing is going to hit around April or May. The cinematics and machinima teams outdid themselves in Cataclysm with the worgen and goblin movies, and I am extremely interested to see what they have in store for us with the first Catacylsm patch trailer. Those trailers have become one of my favorite things about WoW in the last few years, and I don’t think the next one will disappoint. Hopefully it includes the Firelands, because I am really, really excited to finally break down Ragnaros’ door and give him a piece of my mind… again.
Finally, I am really looking forward to BlizzCon this year. I know, it’s really early to start pondering and wondering, but I had such a wonderful time in October 2010 that I can’t wait to get back to it all. 2011 is one of those years where we get to ride high on our new content, the challenge is fresh, and the world is still full of mysteries and things to do. 2010 felt a lot like a slog, as the entire year was dominated by Icecrown Citadel and lots and lots of snow. This year, I think we’re going to see things change a little more dramatically and dynamically from years past. As with Cataclysm in general, I think Blizzard has really grasped the way to create this content and revitalize the player base.
So, here’s to another great year in the World of Warcraft. 2011 promises to be one of the best yet. What are you looking forward to this year?

Breakfast Topic: Is your guild looking forward to guild perks?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.
Cataclysm is focusing on many new things and changes to the old ways of doing things. With guild experience being on the forefront of these changes, it is no surprise that suddenly people are taking more notice of their social environment, as it may have an impact on the game once the grind for your own guild goes live. Having a group whose personnel and personality are on the same page as you might be nice if you’re planning on receiving some of the benefits (like mounts, special patterns and bonuses to rezzing) immediately.
Some people are very focused on guild perks and have assembled elite crafting and leveling forces or are maintaining the same strict raid teams they’ve had for a while. Others don’t care as much. Blizzard has made it clear that all sorts of guilds can effectively benefit over time from the guild leveling system.
Our guild is especially looking toward having enough people to be able to level up quickly, even if we won’t have a bulk of our guild XP coming in from raiding achievements. This bodes well, as we’ve very quickly started taking on orphans from other servers, alts of people in other guilds and raid teams, and people rolling up new characters.
Does your guild care about the XP system? Are you a close-knit, small guild that will be leveling up slowly, or are you a large raiding guild that things like mass-rezzing appeal to? Or is your guild looking forward to something else entirely?
