The Daily Quest: Getting into character
I like roleplaying; it’s why I write a column on the process. It’s a little bit creative writing, a little bit improvisational acting, and a little bit of the lore that I love, all wrapped up in a tidy package. I sometimes wonder about those who criticize RP and whether or not they actually understand what it’s about, though. If you’ve ever read and enjoyed a novel, what you’re seeing with roleplay is a giant, interactive novel with many authors who write the story as they go along. Sound fun? It is!
Today we’ve got a few posts from around the blogosphere concerning the subject of roleplay.
- WTT: [RP] has a slightly older but incredibly useful post covering the basic starting blocks of RP.
- RP Made Simple offers a stimulus package for those who are concerned with the current state of roleplay activity.
- I Like Pancakes takes a look at character descriptions and common discrepancies in roleplaying stats.

Gold Capped: Getting rich off the real-money auction house?

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Gold Capped, in which Fox Van Allen and Basil “Euripides” Berntsen aim to show you how to make money on the auction house. Capitalism is the best, and communism is for dirty, Soviet-sympathizing hippies. If you disagree, email Fox or twitter him @foxvanallen so you can be added to the CIA’s “list.”
When I first picked up playing the auction house game as a hobby, it was pretty low stakes. After all, I was playing with fake money, amassing a largely non-negotiable fortune that I didn’t know what to do with. One million gold — what was it good for? I couldn’t use it to buy a new car; I couldn’t use it to pay my rent. Heck, I couldn’t even use it to pay for my WoW subscription. It was a majestic fortune usable only in a world that didn’t exist, forever trapped behind the computer screen.
One week ago today, Blizzard dropped a bombshell: Diablo 3 would contain a real-money auction house. Need a new weapon to give you a little bit of an extra edge? Fork over .99. Need money for lunch next week? Log on, and sell a portion of your in-game fortune for real-life cash.
Of course, that’s just for the new Diablo 3 game. But you can’t help but start thinking … what if? What if Blizzard started to allow real-money transactions in WoW? Could it? Would it? And if it did, could we actually use this to make some serious, significant real-life money?

Breakfast Topic: Getting to know your neighbors

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.
World of Warcraft is loaded with characters outside of human control, be they bosses or barmaids, with varying amounts of backstory. While it’s easy to give character motivations, wants, and desires to a raid boss, doing so for every vendor or quest giver in the game would be an impossible task. I can’t really fault Blizzard for failing to make sure that every NPC with an exclamation mark over their head tells you about their pet cat or what they were planning on having for dinner. Some characters exist to get you to kill 10 spiders and only for that purpose, and I’m okay with that.
All that being said, some NPCs are tantalizingly incomplete in a way that gets under your skin. They don’t say much, they might not even offer you quests, but they’re there and they’re compelling because there’s just enough information about them to get your attention, but not enough to round out their stories.
Myra Tyrngaarde, I’m looking at you.
Lucky for us, though, WoW isn’t a static medium, and every patch brings the opportunity for us to cross our fingers and hope for a little character development. What background NPC do you wish had a more compelling story attached to them?

The Daily Quest: Getting ideas, thinking
You tell him, Belle. You tell him, and then you go save your crazy father before he blows himself up doing whatever it is he’s doing. Today we’ve got a few posts from around the blogosphere with all kinds of thinking, ideas, and other smart subjects that Gaston doubtless wouldn’t approve of at all.
- WTS Heals thinks that perhaps you might want to consider using “lifegrip” in raids.
- Tank Out of Water thinks it would be nice if the 4.2 trailer weren’t chock full of Thrall. (Warning, contains some 4.2 spoilers.)
- The Violet Scribe has some interesting ideas regarding weather and World of Warcraft.
