Ghostcrawler details potential solutions for gear inflation

Item inflation is the continually increasing numbers we see on gear, getting larger and larger each expansion. Eventually, perhaps even now according to some, the numbers become so large that they become difficult to, at a glance, make quick computational decisions about.

Is the difference between 1,600,000 and 1,400,000 health really concerning or not? Probably not, at least percentage wise, but the loss of 200,000 health is something that makes to stop and think for a second, and in a raid, that second might be the time you wipe.

Ghostcrawler has detailed two potential plans to deal with this inflation in a new blog post.

Mega Damage
In what sounds like a nod to scientific notation, numbers would be visually collapsed into easier to consume units. So instead of 5000 Strength, you’d have 5K Strength. Or instead of 1,500,000 HP, you’d have 1.5M HP. This is what they do for bosses now, and they’d expand the system to player numbers and other stats.

Another way to think of it: instead of launching a shadow bolt that does 12,000,000 damage, you’d do 12 Mega Damage instead.

The Great Item Level Squish
The second possible solution Ghostcrawler outlined was an item level squish, where all item level increases at the end of expansions are squished down (inflation occurs mostly at the end of expansions, where the gear increases greatly with each content patch). This would have the effect of reducing numbers across the spectrum; so a player before MoP might have 200,000 health, and then when MoP launches, they might have only 20,000 health. Item levels, and assorted numbers, would be squished; potentially quite dramatically.

Ghostcrawler makes a big point, and we’re going to put it in bold: these are just possible solutions, and might not even be the ones they go with in the end. So don’t kiss your tank’s massive HP goodbye just yet.

Ghostcrawler’s full post, after the break.

Ghostcrawler introduces you to the Pandaren monk

Mists of Pandaria is bringing us the new monk class as well as the new Pandaren race, finally making its way to World of Warcraft after years of speculation and wondering. Blizzard Insider, Blizzard’s own internal look at the wheelings, dealings, and development processes of the company, pulled Lead Systems Designer Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street aside and asked him a bunch of questions about the Pandaren, monks, and the newest expansion.

Ghostcrawler discusses the motivations behind the Pandaren and how they differ from the other races of Azeroth, how the monk class came about and was decided upon, and what monk players outside the Pandaren race will have in store for them when they travel the world. One of the more interesting pieces of information is how player character monks who choose to start as a race other than Pandaren will still have a heavy Pandaria-inspired kit and experience, since it is the Pandaren that bring the monk class to both the Horde and the Alliance. Of course, we have extra confirmation that DPS and tank monks will be sporting agility leather gear, and the healer archetype will don intellect-based leather gear.

I don’t believe that I am alone in this observation, but Blizzard has been out and about like crazy talking about the Pandaren and the monk class nonstop. Personally, I’m loving it. The more, the better. Over the years, Blizzard has gone from a very secretive company to pulling back many of the curtains for players and fans alike, with peeks into the development process and getting out ahead of the speculation machine. It’s learned a lot from The Burning Crusade and Wrath days. Hit the jump for the full interview with Greg Street.

Dev Watercooler: Ghostcrawler on balance in patch 4.3

Lead Systems Designer Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street’s has posted his latest Dev Watercooler, this one explaining the reasoning behind various changes in Patch 4.3. If, like me, you play melee DPS you may be excited, unless you (like me) play a fury warrior, in which case you’ll see those often repeated words that make your gut clench up yet again. The patch 4.3 PTR notes are up, and here we have a discussion of trends you might be noticing.

The changes made are being made to balance out melee and ranged going forward, to get enhancement shamans to stop using caster weapons and mail (the huge changes to Mental Quickness, for instance) and using Lava Lash to spread the Flame Shock debuff around in order to simplify enhancement’s AoE. Resto shaman also got a bit of a buff, which should be nice for them, while DK’s saw some quality of life simplifcation.

Overall it’s worthwhile reading (and the first of more posts to come) to get an idea of where they’re going with design in 4.3.

Patch 4.3: Epic gems and more on the Deathwing encounter from Ghostcrawler

Plaintively waiting for epic gems? They’re on the way in patch 4.3 — and the mechanic to obtain them is a little different this time around, according to Lead Systems Designer Greg Street, a.k.a. Ghostcrawler. In an interview with Tankspot, Ghostcrawler clarified how those epic gems are going to work.

“The way we’re hoping to set it up, and we kind of have this working but things could change before we go live, is when you kill a boss on normal or heroic mode, each player gets a geode, and when they open the geode there’s a chance they may find an epic gem inside. If not, it’ll have blue gems or something like that.” Along with the scoop on epic gems, Ghostcrawler also talked a bit about the upcoming legendary daggers and how they will work, as well as the Deathwing encounter.

For those wondering if the Deathwing encounter will be challenging, it certainly appears so — and Deathwing himself will change from how we’ve seen him so far in game. Rather than the plate-wearing, mammoth-chinned beast we’re accustomed to seeing, Deathwing will be hurt and resemble something Ghostcrawler calls “Cthulhu Deathwing.” The entry for the Deathwing raid will be in the Caverns of Time, along with all other 4.3 instances.

For more on the Deathwing encounter, epic gems, tank threat and other 4.3 information, check out Tankspot’s full interview.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Look at what’s ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing — from astride his back!

Dev Watercooler: Ghostcrawler discusses massive changes to threat

The Dev Watercooler returns with a long, meaty, and controversial post from Lead Systems Designer Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street all about threat stats and the ever-changing role threat plays in World of Warcraft encounter design. In this newest blog, Ghostcrawler muses about last December, when he and his team were preparing to revisit and rework threat stats to make them more compelling for tanks. Since then, the developers have changed their minds about the role of threat completely, almost eliminating threat altogether.

Ghostcrawler addresses the biggest point with the most passion — threat isn’t fun. It never has been, and threat stats aren’t fun to balance. Personally, as a tank, the most contempt and frustration I have for World of Warcraft comes from my inability to control DPSers who can’t stop pressing their buttons for a second. It’s just not fun to get mad at unskilled players. Ghostcrawler wants interaction between new and experienced players to be positive, and when DPSers blame undergeared or new tanks for threat issues when they have successfully beaten Ragnaros to a pulp and taken his gear, it doesn’t make for a positive experience.

With patch 4.3, threat is going to become largely a non-issue. Threat is being increased to five times damage, up from three times damage. Each tank will be given new active defense cooldowns, much like death knight’s Death Strike. Warriors, it seems, will be getting the biggest redesign of the bunch, with rage causing a big problem with how warriors need to spend resources to maximize survivability. DPSers will largely be unaffected and will, in fact, have less time when they have to stop attacking or stop their rotations, because threat will be less of an issue.

Check out the full blog post for more information on the huge changes coming to threat in patch 4.3. There is a lot coming in the future, and we will be testing this stuff heavily on the PTR and have more information when it becomes available.
