New hints of Old Gods in Vashj’ir

Note: This post contains spoilers. If you read this post, you may be mildly spoiled.

The Old Gods are legendary parts of WoW. You’ve got C’Thun hanging out in southern Azeroth, whose unblinking eye stares balefully across the world. Those of us who were part of the Northrend expedition certainly encountered Yogg-Saron. Heck, many of us got so familiar with Yogg-Saron that we made armor out of his blood and danced around Icecrown Citadel in our favorite made-from-death-god prom outfits.

The Old Gods are a defining part of the World of Warcraft experience. They are unmistakeably influenced by the Lovecraft mythos, wherein ancient gods from the stars balefully disregard the lives of humans. (Remind you of a certain heavenly-bodied heroic boss fight?) An equally important part of the mythos, however, is the unknowable, abyssal fathoms of the ocean’s deeps. This is a world where humans can not tread, where light does not shine, and where we can not know what exists.

Around Azeroth: Old gods do new jobs

“Azeroth ia ia!” proclaims madman Takshash of <Rooster Illusion> on Thrall (US-H). “‘That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die.’ N’Zoth waits dreaming! N’zoth fhtagn! One of my favorite spots in the game was made even cooler by the Shattering.”

Know Your Lore: The Old Gods, part four — their dread shadow

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

To date we’ve discussed C’Thun and Yogg-Saron, the Old Gods that have to date made an appearance in the game. But they’re far from the only Old Gods on Azeroth, and the Old Gods on Azeroth are far from the only Old Gods in the entire Warcraft universe. As we discussed before, the Old Gods are a universal phenomenon, spreading chaos and destruction wherever they go, whether they’re being summoned into Outland’s Shadowmoon Valley or having their servitors corrupt the former prison wing of the naaru vessel Tempest Keep.

So far in the Cataclysm beta, we’ve seen the Twilight’s Hammer more or less in full on “Let’s bring the Old Gods back!” mode. They’re running excavations in Darkshore and the Twilight Higlands, their camps have sprung up on the shores of Thousand Needles’ new submerged environment, and entities like Soggoth and Isorath have been discovered. (Until I hear differently, I’m still assuming that Isorath is an actual Old God, because if not man, that’s one really big mess of tentacles for a servitor.) But these are far from the only potential places where the Old Gods’ presence can be felt.

Know Your Lore: The Old Gods part three — Yogg-Saron

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

To pick up a thread from our original Old God post, we now have a name for the entity that may or may not be an Old God in the Twilight Highlands (and I’m gambling that it is): Isorath. This demotes Soggoth the Slitherer to “really, really powerful servant” status, but it’s worth keeping in mind that Great Cthulhu himself was not an Elder God, merely a Great Old One, and perhaps we’re about to discover a similar division in Warcraft’s lore. We now almost surely know the names of three Old Gods; it’s too soon to call.

However, that’s for the future. This week, we turn our eyes to The Beast With A Thousand Maws. Tremble before the God of Death! If you’ve run Ulduar, you’ve probably run into the handsome fellow above, who dwells therein. Its blood is power, its thoughts madness; few can resist the power of the lucid dream.

Know Your Lore: The Old Gods part two — C’Thun

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

Last week we talked about the Old Gods, both ones we know as of right now and ones we can speculate upon come the Cataclysm. This week, we turn an unblinking gaze upon the master of unblinking gazes, the Old God that has arguably the most direct impact upon all of Azeroth. Not only did it indirectly create the nerubians and directly altered the qiraji into their modern form, not only did it battle a Titan to a standstill, but its connection to the Twilight’s Hammer and their demented leader Cho’gall means that even during the upcoming Cataclysm, the consequences of its actions are unfolding.

Most interestingly, this Old God did not even have a name until its own creations gave it one.

Know Your Lore: The Eternals part two — the Loa gods of the trolls

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

Last week we took a brief look at the Eternals known as Ancients — immortal beings that were worshiped largely by the night elves, though other races also paid their respects to these ancient beings. This week we’ll be moving from the demigods of the night elves to the gods, demigods and Loa of the trolls. The pantheon of Loa is vast and largely undefined, though we’ve seen glimpses of gods here and there, and will see at least one more of them during the Echo Isles event that will be coming sometime before Cataclysm‘s release. Some of the Loa gods referenced in today’s article originate from the Warcraft role-playing games, and should not be taken as full-on canon as a result, however there are several other Loa that are featured in game.

To begin, the Loa are essentially primal gods, with each god representing a different animal or domain. Where the Ancients covered various types of creatures, the Loa cover various aspects of creatures — there’s a very subtle different between the two. The Loa tend to be a little darker, and some could be called “evil.” In order to make this a bit more organized, I’ll be sorting the Loa according to tribe.
