Drama Mamas: Too shy to change guilds

Drama Mamas Lisa Poisso and Robin Torres are experienced gamers and real-life mamas — and just as we don’t want our precious babies to be the ones kicking and wailing on the floor of the checkout lane next to the candy, neither do we want you to become known as That Guy on your realm.

I was going to go with a favorite video from the 80′s for this week’s embed, but then I caught the above video on Moviewatch and it seemed serendipitous.

Dear Drama Mamas

We on the other side of the globe (read Europe) also read WoW Insider and I personally enjoy your little space on WoW Insider very much. However I have a problem and of course I wouldn’t be writing to you otherwise.

Here’s the case. I have been in a semi-hardcore guild for the past 2 years. When I first got there it was a friendly guild with lots of activities and fun and, most important for me, progress. I loved to raid with them because I got to see bosses I hadn’t seen before due to my old guild not having so much progress. This raiding only made me want to do more and more until cutting edge progress was the thing I (and to some extent the guild) was aiming for.

WoW Moviewatch: How to win at guilds

I was wondering when the ineffable Wowcrendor would turn his wry eye for the WoW guy toward one of the most basic social structures of the game: player guilds. And now, he’s delivered on that hope with How to win at guilds. This machinima is classic Wowcrendor style, which is another way of saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

I think it’s interesting how many archetypes Wowcrendor has developed over the span of his career. Certain characters and tropes have become nearly instantly recognizable to the audience. A good example of this is “Gogogo” guy. We know the character, understand the joke, and respond to the whole meaning instead of simply this isolated appearance. It’s a testament to how successful Wowcrendor has been, and I look forward to seeing how he grows that dialogue with his viewers in the future.

Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at machinima@wow.com.

BlizzCon 2010: Guilds meet up around BlizzCon fun

Players didn’t only trickle into BlizzCon’s realm meetup area in singles and pairs. Many guilds have used the con as an opportunity to stage annual guild meetups, flying in for an epic guild-centered weekend that includes BlizzCon not as the centerpiece but the icing on the cake. <GNERDS> of Frostwolf (US-A), together since vanilla WoW’s beta, used the weekend as a hub for one of its regular real-world meetups.

Some 25 guildmates gathered from as far as Washington and Texas for the meetup, including Alex Mueller (aka Sparco the holy paladin), GM of <GNERDS>. Despite the fact that none of the guild’s members knew each other before playing WoW together, they’re all fast friends now. “We don’t call each other by our character names anymore,” Alex reports. (In fact, Alex proposed to his wife, also a member of the guild, during BlizzCon two years ago.)

Addon Spotlight: My guild’s favorite 4.0.1-compatible addons

Each week, WoW Insider brings you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs as well as Addon Spotlight, which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond — your addons folder will never be the same. This week, I ask my 10-man, again, for some of their favorite addons for 4.0.1.

Right now, as I speak, a plane hurtles through the sky towards California. I am aboard that plane — BlizzCon, here I come! Many of you will be at the WoW Insider reader meetup at the Anabella hotel, and I can’t wait to say hello. Aka’magosh and all that.

My original plan was to highlight some addon UI compilations this week, but to be honest, not all the ones I wanted to highlight had updated yet. I’ll give them another week or so. Suffice to say, we still have a ton of fun in store for you. What do I do when plans fall through? Favorites. Not just my favorites, mind you, but the favorites of the hapless schlubs in my guild. It basically works like this: I enter our Mumble channel, scream at them for their favorite addons, and I’m met with some awesome suggestions. Let’s hear what the Smooth Jazz boys and girls have to say.

The Classifieds: Scilla guilds rally for breast cancer awareness

The Classifieds brings you weekly news from around the WoW community, including our famous Random Acts of Uberness.

One of my favorite things about the WoW community is the various ways that we, as players, promote a certain level of social consciousness. Sure, you hear all these horrible stories about ninjas and terrible vulgarity. But for everyone of those, you hear about something incredible. This story is one of the incredible ones. Sure, it’s an online video game rally, but that’s the fundamental point: create awareness where previously there was none.

Fayvren and Mahjarette from Scilla (US-A) decided to promote breast cancer awareness month by changing their guild tabards to pink. Other guilds on Scilla were inspired by their example and followed suit. Encouraged by this reception, Fayvren and Mahjarette farmed massive amounts of pink material to create the necessary costumes for the rally you see above and after the jump. They definitely want to thank the guilds <Resurrected Phenomenon>, <Party People>, <EVO>, <The Panic Attacks> and <Official>.

Breakfast Topic: Does your guild’s social reputation matter?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW.com.

If you’ve been on the internet in any capacity for a few years, you are familiar with the Penny Arcade theory (NSFW language). I’ve just come through a couple weeks of this with my guild. It resulted in one person’s being kicked and another leaving. Briefly, the kicked person tried to sell tracking the Time-Lost Proto Drake for 5k gold. A person on the server paid 2,500g up front and was led on a wild goose chase, after which the ex-guild member phased, hearthed and put the “pigeon” on ignore. When an officer and I confronted the perpetrator, the lies grew ever more convoluted. I kicked him and repaid, from guild funds, the money stolen. The person who quit behaved in a manner that wasn’t appropriate. I called him out on it.

These incidents have me thinking: Does it matter how you behave in a fake world? Realistically, I’m probably never going to meet 95 percent of the people on my server. In our guild Code of Conduct, I state right at the beginning, “We do not tolerate malicious, hurtful behavior or speech in guild chat, party chat, WoW chat or on Vent. This is grounds for dismissal. Honor and respect each other and other guilds. When you join this guild, you represent us wherever you go. Respect others as you expect to be respected. Your integrity and actions directly reflect onto this guild. Inappropriate conduct with other guild members and the Llane community at large is not permitted and is grounds for dismissal.”

I am adamant about this. I feel that if you want to be treated with respect, taken seriously, invited to raids and not called out on the server forum, you must respect others. I’ve worked very hard to create a guild that is respected. When people think about us, they know we’re here for the fun of the game. We don’t take ourselves seriously, and we treat you fairly and with respect. Am I way off base here? Again, does it matter? How do you think your server views you and your guild? Do you care?
