Blizzard has begun what seems to be a series of lore articles spotlighting key characters in the Warcraft universe that have gone through radical transformations before and after the cataclysm. The first character to get the write-up treatment is the orc you love to hate, new warchief of the Horde Garrosh Hellscream.

Of course, the machinima master of sarcasm approaches this issue with the same tongue-in-cheek love of the game as always. I really think it’s Wowcrendor’s obvious affection for all things Warcraft that keep these videos in the realm of fan sarcasm, instead of something a little more obnoxious. It’s a hard line to walk, but it’s one that Wowcrendor mastered long ago.

Garrosh Hellscream, son of the mighty Grom, came to Azeroth at the bidding of Warchief Thrall. Garrosh knew very, very little of Azeroth — he knew that the Horde of Azeroth was not only made up of orcs, but other races as well. He knew that the Alliance were the enemies of the Horde. He’d heard of the internment camps and what the humans had done to the orcish race. He didn’t know much, but he knew that the Horde were his allies and the Alliance his enemies — and any enemy, as far as Hellscream was concerned, was only there to be eliminated.
But where did this drive to eliminate the Alliance actually originate? Garrosh was not present during the Second War. He was not present for the battles at the Black Temple. He was sick, in Garadar, with the rest of those stricken with the red pox. For someone who had spent so long living a life in which he was certain he would never be a competent leader, Garrosh certainly had a lot of nerve in the Warcraft comics, the events leading up to Wrath of the Lich King, and during Wrath itself. When, exactly, did this hothead emerge — and why did Thrall choose Garrosh to lead in his absence?

Last week’s Know Your Lore with Thrall left the former Warchief in Nagrand, seeking guidance not only in regards to the raging elements of Azeroth but his own life as well. The former Warchief knew he couldn’t step down without leaving someone in charge, and so he had to pick a temporary successor. It was his choice, however, that baffled and angered many World of Warcraft players — rather than picking someone well known like Saurfang, or perhaps giving Vol’jin a chance to shine, Thrall chose Garrosh Hellscream.
Garrosh’s life has been anything but easy. First introduced in The Burning Crusade expansion, Garrosh was apparently — let’s face it — a petulant crybaby who couldn’t even muster the interest to lead the people of Garadar when the impending death of Greatmother Geyah approached. It was up to us as players to convince young Hellscream that life would be all right without the Greatmother, but he simply refused to listen. It wasn’t until Thrall visited Nagrand that Hellscream finally stepped up, in a much larger capacity than anyone imagined.
But where did young Garrosh come from? What was his life before we encountered the sulky, unwilling leader of the uncorrupted orcs of Nagrand? What caused him to be so fearful of stepping up to lead? And more importantly, why exactly is he fit to lead the Horde, a much larger group of individuals than that tiny village, when he couldn’t be bothered to step up in Garadar?

He is the destroyer. Drinker of demon blood, first slave of Mannoroth, he who ushered in the Blood Curse and the bloody haze of rage and battle frenzy it woke in the orcish heart. He was in the vanguard of the army that stormed Shattrath, the last and greatest of the draenei cities, and no axe can be said to have slaughtered more of them. No hand was more stained, not Gorefiend, not Deadeye, not Bladefist. In a sea of names that denote battle hardened warriors, his name stands out.
He is the savior. He is the last survivor leading his people when most of their kind were imprisoned and defeated. He was the one who showed the young Thrall a free orc, taught him their language and pointed him to those who would show him his ultimate destiny. Tripped up by his fury and guilt, twice he stumbled back toward the blood haze that dominated his people, the curse he himself brought upon them. Finally, goaded beyond endurance, it is the same bellicose anger that has granted him his greatest successes and his greatest failure that frees his people.
Grom Hellscream drank the demon Mannoroth’s blood and led his people into slavery. Grom Hellscream slew the demon Mannoroth and led his people out of slavery. Few beings can be said to be the best and worst of their people at once — but then again, few people can say they are the Giant’s Heart.
