Spiritual Guidance: Minor glyphs for discipline and holy priests, plus some pre-BlizzCon silliness

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. Dawn Moore covers the healing side of things for discipline and holy priests. She also writes for LearnToRaid.com and produces the Circle of Healing Podcast.

Whenever I’m scoping out priests on the Armory or even in my own raid team, I always like to see what glyphs they pick. Mind you, there doesn’t actually tend to be much variety from priest to priest. The best glyphs usually stand leaps and bounds ahead of the competition, especially with major and minor glyphs, so there isn’t usually much difference between one priest or another. So why do I check? Because I’m looking to see if the priest has Glyph of Shadowfiend equipped.

Spiritual Guidance: Holy priest stat weights revisited

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. Dawn Moore covers the healing side of things for discipline and holy priests. She also writes for LearnToRaid.com and produces the Circle of Healing Podcast.

It’s been a pretty slow week for priest-related news, so it looks like I’ll finally be able to get back on schedule and finish my stat weight series. It’s funny how class news always sweeps through like a tornado, grabbing up everything in its path for a short time before disappearing. Personally, I’d prefer something more consistent, but I guess the only way Blizzard could manage that is do away with the other nine classes and change the game to World of Priestcraft. One class, 30 different specs (“paladin” would be one of them), divided up between two factions: holy and shadow. It’d be like the Crusades, or Aion, except not as depressing as both of those were.

Spiritual Guidance: Patch 4.3 holy priest buffs and more tier 13 set bonuses

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. Dawn Moore covers the healing side of things for discipline and holy priests. She also writes for LearnToRaid.com and produces the Circle of Healing Podcast.

You’d really think after all this time Blizzard would have done the obvious and invented some sort of healing hand grenade for holy priests. It could be the little brother of Lightwell or perhaps some sort of talent upgrade to Holy Nova — toss the grenade to a specific location on the dungeon floor and in 10, 15, or whatever seconds, an explosion of AOE healing would nuke the area. Wouldn’t that be fun? Naturally there’d have to be some witty flavor text on the tooltip, but — wait, what day is this? Dawn looks at her calendar. Oh! Uh … Never mind what I just said.

Today, we’ve got to get caught up on patch 4.3 news. We’ve been up to our necks in priest news from patch 4.3 recently. Last week, we got a first look at our two-piece and four-piece set bonuses for priest tier 13; this week, we got a look at the gear model itself and a hefty list of mostly positive changes. We also (shock and awe) already received a few tweaks to our tier 13 set bonuses, so there is quite a lot to tackle today. First, let’s talk fashion.

The Light and How to Swing It: Radical changes to holy paladins on the 4.3 PTR

holy radiance

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Every Sunday, Chase Christian invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to email me with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome.

When I first checked out the official PTR change list for the upcoming patch 4.3, I wasn’t expecting many holy paladin changes. We’ve been performing admirably in Cataclysm, comfortably straddling the line between obsolescence and ubiquity. Upon the reading the changes, I was shocked to see such radical changes to our talents, spells, and playstyle. Patch notes like these are always scary, as we don’t know if we’re being gutted or reinforced. I immediately downloaded the latest PTR client and got to work.

Holy Radiance
was completely retooled into a cast spell that we use on a friendly group member, with talents changed to reflect the new design. We gained two new holy power sources, and Light of Dawn had its target count shifted. Our bread-and-butter mana regeneration mechanic, the Seal of Insight and Judgement system, was also scrapped in favor of a flat regeneration buff that scales with our spirit.

Spiritual Guidance: A first look at tier 13 set bonuses for holy and discipline priests

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. Dawn Moore covers the healing side of things for discipline and holy priests. She also writes for LearnToRaid.com and produces the Circle of Healing Podcast.

Over the weekend, Blizzard released a preview of tier 13 set bonuses, which for priests means despite not having any idea what priest tier 13 is going to look like at the moment, we now at least know what it does. Exciting, huh? So as you can expect we’re going to take a look at the two-piece and four-piece bonuses today and give the lot of it a little analysis for discipline and holy priests. Let’s have a look, shall we?

  • Two-piece After using Power Infusion or Lightwell, the mana cost of your healing spells is reduced by 25% for [10|15] seconds (10 seconds for discipline, 15 for non-discipline).
  • Four-piece Your Power Word: Shield has a 10% chance to absorb 100% additional damage, and the cooldown of your Holy Word abilities is reduced by 20%.

Breakfast Topic: Holy moly, can you believe we forgot the Harvest Festival?

Oh my god, you guys. We here at WoW Insider totally dropped the ball — the exciting Harvest Festival started two days ago, and we didn’t say a word about it! Don’t worry, though. It’s a week-long event, and you have until Sept. 13 to get in on all the fun!

And what fun is that, you may ask? Well, this year’s Harvest Festival is going to be better than all past Harvest Festivals combined. It’s got a plus-sized roller coaster for some of our more obese thrill-seekers, Larry Bird’s 84-year-old Aunt Tilda, an all-organic corn maze, not three but four hospitality kiosks, famed little horse Li’l Sebastian, and …

Oh wait, wrong Harvest Festival. This is the one in Azeroth with absolutely no achievements associated with it. The one, where, according to our own Daniel Whitcomb:

Yeah, it’s a small holiday, and a weird one at that. I mean, you either honor Uther, who was a jerk to Tirion Fordring, ineffective against the Scourge and was betrayed and killed by his protege, or Grom, who betrayed the Orcish race to the Burning Legion at least twice, and whose clan is still one of the major sources of strife and bad Horde-Alliance relations on Azeroth today.

So, uh, yeah. How are you celebrating the Harvest Festival? Are you doing the one single quest associated with the holiday? And how will you ever be able to stand the 51-week wait until Harvest Festival 2012 once this one is over?

The Light and How to Swing It: Leveling your holy paladin in Cataclysm

tauren paladin

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Every Sunday, Chase Christian invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to email me with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome.

Of the three roles in WoW, healers are the odd man out. While mages might call it damage and a warrior might call it threat, the fact is that DPSers and tanks both excel at hurting their opponents. One of my guildmates often refers to tanking as “just DPSing from the front.” Healers, on the other hand, have nearly no offensive capabilities. The developers were nice enough to give every healer a cheap spell or two to spam to make us feel like we’re contributing, but our DPS is abysmal. Healers, more than any other role, are pointless without a group to support.

Throughout the years, we’ve heard the legends of the shockadin — the holy paladin build that doled out merciful healing and wrathful judgement in equal doses. While offensive builds for the holy tree have always been around, they’ve never been truly viable in any serious situation. I love the thought of Holy Shocking some hunter right off his high horse, but the numbers just don’t add up.

The Light and How to Swing It: Holy Shield and the future of active mitigation

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Protection specialist Matt Walsh spends most of his time receiving concussions for the benefit of 24 other people, obsessing over his hair (a blood elf racial!), and maintaining the tankadin-focused blog Righteous Defense.

It’s been a little more than two months now since patch 4.2 brought us the redesigned Holy Shield. Since then, we’ve had ample time to see its true power, to see what an amazing addition to our toolbox it is. And that’s only the beginning.

Blizzard is gearing up in either patch 4.3 (or, more likely, 5.0) to introduce a new facet of tanking for all classes — what it’s deemed “active mitigation”. Coupled with the (in my opinion, misguided) neutering of threat, the profession of tanking is going to change dramatically. In this column, I’m going to talk about the ramifications of the Holy Shield change in regards to active mitigation — specifically, what it’s meant for paladin tanking in the Firelands and how it points the way to a future of more control over our survivability.

The Light and How to Swing It: Patch 4.2′s effect on holy PVP

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Every Sunday, Chase Christian invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to email me with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome.

I have a feeling that the developers have a hard time balancing healers for PVP combat. How should healers be killed in PVP? Should we run out of mana eventually, or is a bursty switch the only answer? Can the focused efforts of a single DPSer be enough to topple us, or should it take two players to finish us off? Trying to balance all of these elements for four different classes with five different healing trees is a challenge by any measure. Every organized PVP encounter revolves around the healers involved, especially in the golden bracket of 3v3.

Prior to patch 4.2, teams loved seeing a holy paladin across the arena from them, as holy paladins weren’t exactly amazing at 3v3 matches in the first few months of Cataclysm. We have a few key weaknesses, notably our lack of any long-term crowd control like Hex and our lone school of magic, holy, which leaves us defenseless when interrupted. We weren’t completely ineffective in arenas before patch 4.2, but we also weren’t breaking any records or winning any #1 Healer trophies.

Spiritual Guidance: Raid and pre-raid gear in patch 4.2 for holy and discipline priests

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. Dawn Moore covers healing for discipline and holy priests and babysits Fox Van Allen on weekends while his warlock parents go to the cinema. Dawn also writes for LearnToRaid.com and produces the Circle of Healing Podcast.

“Oh, no! There’s no spirit cloth in Firelands! What do we do?!”

Calm down.

I don’t know why, but there has been some serious fear-mongering in the priest community this past week regarding the lack of spirit cloth gear in the Firelands. All over the internet, priests are screaming for their lives, running in circles, drinking Kool-Aid from the Twilight Council, and sending me really weird emails. (Apparently, they even sent Fox some emails too. Go figure.) Though I have no idea how this all started, I’m going to lay this out so it’s easy to understand: You do not need to freak out about the lack of spirit cloth gear in the Firelands.

If you’ll give me your undivided attention for the next few paragraphs, I’ll not only explain why, I’ll walk you through all the pretty gear you can get from the Firelands, daily quests, and then some.
