Breakfast Topic: What keeps you playing?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

World of Warcraft has been around for seven years this November. Over the course of those nearly seven years, we’ve seen three expansions, countless content patches and a world event to usher in each expansion. That’s a lot of content to experience for someone who has been playing since WoW first launched. Even for a relatively new player, there’s a lot of content to experience on the way to 85.

What does someone who has leveled to 85, experienced all the endgame content and seen all the sights of Azeroth do next? What keeps them playing after they see and do everything Azeroth has to offer? I myself have various alts that are all at different levels. I’m an achievement seeker and always going after various achievements that I can do on my own or with the help of some friends. Even pushing the limits of my class by seeing what past raids and current dungeons I can solo is something I enjoy.

Not everyone likes alts, the achievement system or playing alone. Everyone has their own definition of what they consider fun while visiting Azeroth. What do you consider fun, and what keeps you playing WoW?

Breakfast Topic: Is it the world or the gameplay that keeps you hooked?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

When I first started playing WoW, I read every quest. I was a newbie who didn’t know where anything was and didn’t even know of the existence of addons to help me in my questing. So I often searched the quest text for clues about where to find mobs and items. As my game savvy increased, I read the quests less and less, until finally I didn’t read them at all but rather clicked on my map to see where I needed to go and what I needed to kill.

Now, I find myself slowing down again. The lore is interesting to me, and more and more, I realize how expansive the world is and how fun it is to participate in that world. I am not an RPer by any account, but I find myself wanting WoW to be a world and not just a game.

Out of a desire to understand and enjoy the lore, some players have read Arthas: Rise of the Lich King, The Shattering, and other WoW / Warcraft-related books. Other players have absolutely no desire to know the lore and view WoW as a game that they enjoy playing — not a live-action fantasy novel.

Are you the sort of player who loves the lore? Or do you just play for the game action?

15 Minutes of Fame: Road warrior dad keeps up with son via WoW

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own 15 Minutes of Fame.

By now, most of us know somebody or have at least heard of somebody in an extended family that stays close by gaming together. Fact is, we can’t really think of a better way to strengthen family ties across the miles. We all know that common interests are the mortar in a thriving relationship, and we know that kids open up with long-distance relatives most easily when the pressure’s not on them to conversationally “perform.” When you game with family across the miles, you share a real-time hobby with all the attendant chatter, enthusiasm and companionship that naturally comes along.

Meet Golis, aka Blaine Sundrud. The 40-year-old traveling sales engineer spends a huge portion of his life on the road — so he’s turned to WoW to help keep in touch with his teenage son. “We have been able to use our time in game to eliminate the fact that I am in a hotel in Florida while he is still home in Utah,” he explains. “We get on a phone call (hooray for free long-distance) and can just talk and fool around for the evening.”

The family connection doesn’t end there. “Combine that with the fact that my parents (who live in Pennsylvania) play on the same server (both of them),” Golis continues. “While they are not the WoW addicts that my son and I are, we can usually count on a couple times a month conferencing them in on our call, and the four of us can go instancing, fishing, or just generally looking at the scenery. Due to the cost of travel, my son probably sees his grandparents in person once a year. Thanks to WoW, he has been able to get to know and play with them as if they just lived over the river and through the woods.”
