The Light and How to Swing It: Patch 4.3 news and paladin T13 bonuses

Paladin tier 13

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Protection specialist Matt Walsh spends most of his time receiving concussions for the benefit of 24 other people, obsessing over his hair (a blood elf racial!), and maintaining the tankadin-focused blog Righteous Defense.

The ball has begun rolling on patch 4.3, with the player test realm officially going up Tuesday night for public consumption. There isn’t terribly much of interest just yet — only the first iteration of the patch, so obviously much more is in store for us. Still, there are some interesting changes (and some glaringly absent ones) that demand discussion. Let’s dig in.

Paladin tier 13 armor set revealed

Paladins, all of your griping about how paladin armor “doesn’t look like paladin armor” appears to have made a distinct impression with Blizzard artists, who designed patch 4.3‘s Battleplate of Radiant Glory just for you. This is the latest in Blizzard’s tier 13 set previews, and definitely one of the best (no cloth to be seen here). Here’s what the artist in charge of the set had to say about its inspirations:

Design requested a set to ‘key off the Guardian of Ancient Kings summon,’ and I thought the concept of ‘feathered’ plate mail, rendered in silver and gold, would create an aggressive, yet sweeping and powerful silhouette. The previous paladin raid set had a good deal of cloth, but we wanted this set to be entirely platemail.

The key to a strong paladin tier is hitting a balance between martial prowess and elegant grace — tapping into that classic Arthurian knight archetype.

Check out the full preview, along with the requisite transmogrification retrospective, over at Blizzard’s community site.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Look at what’s ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing — from astride his back!

The Light and How to Swing It: How to roll a new paladin tank

Blood Elf child

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Protection specialist Matt Walsh spends most of his time receiving concussions for the benefit of 24 other people, obsessing over his hair (a blood elf racial!), and maintaining the tankadin-focused blog Righteous Defense.

Perhaps you’re a player new to WoW, attracted by the new free-to-play-ish 20 levels of the game, or just someone bored with your main and stable of alts looking to take the One True Tank (I kid, I kid — I swear, I kid) out for a spin. Either way, you’re going to be getting on at the ground floor of a very fun class and a very fun role.

The game needs more tanks, so I’ll do my best in this column to get you off to a proper start. I’ll go over the benefits of leveling as a tank, what race you should choose, what heirlooms you can arm yourself with if you have a main bankrolling the whole enterprise, what stats will be important for your new tank when gear drops, and the talenting and glyphing choices you should make on your way to the top.

Retribution paladin buff and other hotfixes incoming tonight

A number of hotfixes have been (or will be) applied to live realms today. One is a particularly noteworthy PVE retribution paladin fix intended to bring ret DPS up to match the competition in the Firelands, as paladin DPS has fallen a bit behind in this raid tier. Paladins will be receiving a +40% damage boost to Censure, the stacking DoT associated with Seal of Truth.

The other hotfixes are aimed at quest-related bugs that may have been interfering with players’ solo progression. The explanation for the retribution buff and the details of these quest hotfixes can both be found after the break below.

The Light and How to Swing It: Leveling your holy paladin in Cataclysm

tauren paladin

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Every Sunday, Chase Christian invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to email me with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome.

Of the three roles in WoW, healers are the odd man out. While mages might call it damage and a warrior might call it threat, the fact is that DPSers and tanks both excel at hurting their opponents. One of my guildmates often refers to tanking as “just DPSing from the front.” Healers, on the other hand, have nearly no offensive capabilities. The developers were nice enough to give every healer a cheap spell or two to spam to make us feel like we’re contributing, but our DPS is abysmal. Healers, more than any other role, are pointless without a group to support.

Throughout the years, we’ve heard the legends of the shockadin — the holy paladin build that doled out merciful healing and wrathful judgement in equal doses. While offensive builds for the holy tree have always been around, they’ve never been truly viable in any serious situation. I love the thought of Holy Shocking some hunter right off his high horse, but the numbers just don’t add up.

The Light and How to Swing It: Holy paladin gear in patch 4.2

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Every Sunday, Chase Christian invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to email me with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome.

I’m not a big fan of patch days. I hate needing to update all of my addons, I hate the endless spam of “hay were’s the new vender?” in trade chat, and I hate how overcrowded the new zones are.

While I think there’s plenty to dislike, patch days aren’t all bad. With patch 4.2′s release date closing, we can look forward to Firelands and the new quest hub in Hyjal. The introduction of new reputations and raid bosses mean that there are both new challenges to be overcome and new rewards to be obtained.

The good news is that the gear we’ll be seeing in patch 4.2 is much better itemized for holy paladin than what we saw in the first tier of Cataclysm raiding. Holy paladins are the only spec that uses plate gear with intellect on it, and so it’s always a bit interesting to see gear that’s not that good for us. Our potency should improve significantly from both the pure ilvl boost from the new gear, but also due to the better selection of secondary stats.

The Light and How to Swing It: Holy paladin patch 4.1 roundup

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Every Sunday, Chase Christian invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to email me with any questions you want answered, or catch me weekly on the Matticast.

The section of the patch 4.1 notes dedicated to holy paladins was particularly sparse this cycle. The only significant change was the buff to our Illuminated Healing mastery, as the Aura Mastery / Crusader Aura interaction was supposed to be changed some time ago. Some holy paladins may have been concerned with the note about Word of Glory receiving a 20-second cooldown, but luckily that’s neutralized by an addition to Walk in the Light, one of our passive mastery bonuses.

The bulk of new content in patch 4.1 comes from the revamped troll instances of Zul’Gurub and Zul’Aman. New dungeons means new gear, and that includes several new epic items that are of interest to holy paladins. Guild challenges also introduce sizeable rewards for running dungeons in a guild group, and so you’ll be dragged into healing these new 5-mans in no time. There’s also the possibility that the new Call to Arms feature could yield bonus loot for healers volunteering to pug a heroic, but I haven’t seen the little bag icon move from the tank icon since the patch’s release.

The Light and How to Swing It: Holy paladin secrets for defeating Nefarian

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Every Sunday, Chase Christian invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to email me with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome.

The true final boss of Cataclysm‘s first tier is a hotly debated topic. With three different raid instances available at launch, the end boss in each raid zone could be eligible for the top spot. While most people will agree that Al’Akir is only a secondary opponent, Nefarian and Cho’gall are both old and powerful enemies. Cho’gall has been covered in the WoW comic books with great detail, while Nefarian is so common in WoW that we’ve already killed him once. Sinestra could even make her claim for the throne, as she is a difficult, heroic-only boss.

In my opinion, Nefarian is the final boss of tier 11. He’s Deathwing’s son, which makes him public enemy #2. During the encounter, we’re faced with not one but two dragons, plus all the doomfire and adds that we can handle. The Nefarian encounter is the type of fight that I would’ve hated before Cataclysm. Now, we have AoE abilities to handle the incredible raid damage and the mana management tools to keep ourselves from running dry.

The Light and How to Swing It: Patch 4.1 for the protection paladin

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Protection specialist Matt Walsh spends most of his time receiving concussions for the benefit of 24 other people, obsessing over his hair (a blood elf racial!), and maintaining the tankadin-focused blog Righteous Defense.

Assumedly — hopefully — we’re a week away from the release of patch 4.1, and with it all the various tweaks to our beloved tanking spec. Some are buffs, some are nerfs (including one fat nerf to Word of Glory), and the others are changes of various import that’ll have some subtle but important effects on our tanking.

The troll hunt will be on, but before you queue for that first Zul’Gurub or Zul’Aman 5-man, you’ll want to get your house in order. I’ll give you the ins and outs of 4.1, what it means for us in terms of every little affected facet, and how to cope with the hardballs that Blizzard tosses at us, so you can hit the ground running with hardly a stumble.

The Light and How to Swing It: Choosing holy paladin major glyphs

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Every Sunday, Chase Christian invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to email me with any questions you want answered, and you can catch me weekly on the Matticast.

Prime glyphs have been designed by Blizzard to be no-brainers; they’re powerful, and their purpose is clear. While there are four different prime glyphs that a holy paladin can choose from, most holy paladins will neglect the Glyph of Divine Favor and pick the other three. Some of the high-end paladins (such as Diamondtear) swear by the Divine Favor glyph, as they rely on their cooldowns heavily during the hardest heroic encounters. If you find yourself ignoring Word of Glory, you can sacrifice its glyph for Divine Favor as well.

Minor glyphs are largely irrelevant for us, as they only cut down the mana cost of spells that we normally cast while out of combat. It’s cool to save mana, but the minor glyphs are really automatic and almost pointless. The major glyph situation is quite different for holy paladins. We have a smorgasbord of major glyphs to choose from, with each offering unique benefits. I find myself changing my major glyphs quite often, as many of them are only valuable in certain situations.
