It's fabulous if you're in the list – I'm looking at you, World of Warcraft — but as endless companies have proven, making a subscription business that is good enough to persuade people to cancel their WoW allegiance is very tough.

WRUP: “Hello from the past” says the time traveler from the future

Every week, just at the start of the weekend, we catch up with the WoW Insider staff and ask them, “What are you playing this week?” — otherwise known as: WRUP. Join us to see what we’re up to in and out of game, and catch us in the comments to let us know what you’re playing, too!

Greetings, humans! I am a time traveler from the near-distant future. Three hours in the future, exactly! I’d give you news and tidings of the future, but I arrived over three hours ago, so all my unique knowledge is already outdated. Sorry about that. Bad planning.

Time travelers such as me have unique needs. We are subject to terrible bouts of time sickness. And, of course, we need gobs of mammoth chunks and delicious powdered horse milk. (100% horse — no ponies!) Thankfully, there’s a store in Los Angeles that caters to these needs, the Echo Park Time Travel Mart. It seriously exists, and it seriously sells stuff like Robot Milk. There are pictures after the break to prove it.

The store is actually a front for 826LA, a nonprofit writing and tutoring center for city kids. So if you’re hungry for horse milk, you can get some while supporting the youth of Los Angeles. Which is a pretty awesome thing. I mean, we need to start nurturing the next Fox Van Allen now. I can’t keep this WRUP thing up forever.

Which reminds me: We should probably get this WRUP rolling. So, everyone, What aRe yoU Playing this week?

Breakfast Topic: Back to the future or forward to the past?

Caverns of Time

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

More and more patch 4.3 news has been emerging in recent weeks, and it’s looking like the new dungeons and raid in patch 4.3 will all be Caverns of Time instances. One intriguing twist is that the first of the three new dungeons will actually bring players to a time in the future. Though the news sounds great, I for one do not expect that the new 4.3 PVE content will exhaust the concept behind CoT. The notion of traveling backward or forward in time to witness — and perhaps even influence — an epic event in the story of WoW has the potential to breed an endless number of exiting possibilities.

A CoT instance I would like to see in the future is a visit to the past conflict between the Eredar who joined up with the Burning Legion and the Eredar who fled with the help of the Naaru (aka the Draenei). There hasn’t been much Draenei lore or story development since The Burning Crusade, so I think an Eredar-themed CoT venture would be welcome (and for once, my Draenei shaman wouldn’t have to disguise himself as a Human). Perhaps players could be brought back to the eredar homeworld Argus to assist Velen and the Draenei as they attempt to escape from Archimonde, Kil’Jaeden and the demon-corrupted Eredar. If Sargeras is involved in the next expansion, perhaps the trip back to the time at which he recruited the Eredar could be part of an attempt to weaken or destroy him.

What Caverns of Time dungeons or raids do you hope to see developed in WoW? Would you rather go back to an historic moment in the past or forward to some key event in the future?

Breakfast Topic: What monsters from the past do you remember fondly?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

Once upon a time, a Forsaken warlock and her rogue companion traveled from Tirisfal Glades into the dark forests of Silverpine. The rogue had told the warlock tales of Shadowfang Keep and the treasures she might find there. He also warned her about the creatures prowling Pyrewood Village. “And watch out for Sons of Arugal,” he told her. “They patrol Silverpine, and they will kill us!”

The warlock heeded this warning and was very careful as she moved through the forests. She kept to the road as much as possible and always looked around before stopping to pick an herb. She was becoming quite the herbalist and had recently learned to identify Mageroyal. Seeing it for the first time in the wild excited her so much that she dashed over to pluck a sample from the weeds around it — and forgot to look around first!

“How did I die from picking Mageroyal?” she cried out in anguish.

“Son of Arugal got you!” the rogue replied with a devilish chuckle.

I was afraid of Silverpine after that. Even at level 80, I was looking out for Son of Arugal when I went through there. Hogger has never killed me, but Son of Arugal put the fear of worgen in me! Still, I was sad to take my first steps in Silverpine after Cataclysm hit and realize I would never bend down to pick Mageroyal just as Son of Arugal burst from the shadows again. Silverpine felt too safe.

I ran into Lost Son of Arugal a few nights ago. I /cheered at him before killing him and felt a warm glow in my heart. I’ll still have to watch my back in Silverpine! He might still get me!

What have you found that brings back fond memories of pre-Cataclysm Azeroth?

Interact with target keybind gets you past players atop NPCs

Have you been frustrated with all of the dragons and mammoths sitting atop your vendors and quest NPCs? If you’re like every other WoW player in history, the answer to that question is yes. It happens in every content patch and in every expansion. Every crucial NPC is completely obscured. Luckily, back in patch 3.1, Blizzard added the ability to set an “Interact With Target” keybind, which few players seem to know about.

To set this keybind, bring up World of Warcraft‘s main Options menu (hitting Escape will bring it up), go to the Key Bindings menu, scroll down to Targeting Functions, and you should be able to find the option easily. You can also set an Interact With Mouseover key bind if you so choose. If you’ve never customized your key bindings before, be careful about the key you choose to bind to these functions. You don’t want to overwrite other crucial keybinds accidentally.

Once your Interact With Target key is set, you no longer need to worry about crowds or mammoths. Just /target who you want to interact with and hit the appropriate key. It will bring up the dialogue prompt, and you’re set.

Encrypted Text: One last look at the rogue of Azeroth past

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Today, we look back on the great kills of the past.

With The Shattering’s complete ruination of the planet, Azeroth has been transformed forever. Entire zones have been uprooted, flooded, and even broken in half. Deathwing’s ascent to the mortal realm has left our world with several battle scars. Thrall and the shaman are doing trying their hardest to contain the damage, but the elemental planes are bleeding through. Insert some bad pun using the word Cataclysm here.

Rogues have been sneaking through Azeroth for eons. Mages weren’t around until a race discovered magic, and priests couldn’t heal anyone until they discovered the Light. The art of stealth has been around for as long as there have been shadows to hide in. We’ve walked a million miles without ever leaving a footprint and killed a million foes whose bodies were never found. As we watch the Azeroth we’ve known and loved disintegrate around us, I can’t help but remember our history.
