Around Azeroth: Crab people! Crab people!

I was all set to write this article in an Eric Cartman voice (“No, lobster! This is MAH Jacuzzi, lobster!”) when Alex Ziebart linked me this fascinating yet horrifying web site. Apparently, crabs are ultra-communicative family men, finding burrows to protect their females and their eggs, while lobsters are immortal, loner cannibals. Seriously! Lobsters eat each other in captivity, and they cannot die of old age. Instead, they actually grow stronger and more fertile as they get older.

No wonder lobster is so expensive — eating lobster is like being the Highlander. And that is why Red Lobster is a place you take your girlfriend for dinner, while Red Crab sounds like something your girlfriend will dump you for giving her. (Thanks to Mojo for the screenshot.)

WRUP: Wherein people are devoured

Every week, just at the start of the weekend, we catch up with the WoW Insider staff and ask them, “What are you playing this week?” — otherwise known as: WRUP. Join us to see what we’re up to in and out of game — and catch us in the comments to let us know what you’re playing, too!

I failed to ask the staff a bonus question yet again this week. As is often the case, they managed to come up with one completely on their own. This week’s WRUP is about … cannibalism, I guess? I don’t know. I don’t really get it.

Alex Ziebart (@AlexZiebart): I’m going to be gearing my priest more this weekend. I wasn’t enjoying the class much as holy, so I tried out discipline and it fits my play style much better. Discipline is love. Beyond that I’ll just be doing a lot of writing. Here and elsewhere.

Anne Stickney (@Shadesogrey): Writing of course, interrupted by an appearance on the Group Quest podcast Saturday. Raiding on Sunday, but that’s about it. Bonus question: I like cake. Wait, what was the question again?

15 Minutes of Fame: A 2010 retrospective of WoW people

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own 15 Minutes of Fame.

Who’s really behind that stoic DPSer in your raid group? He never talks much, but he never misses a raid — or an opportunity to snag that mob that’s decided to nibble on you while you’re tank healing. What about that banker you always run into in Darnassus — and why Darnassus, anyway? And what about that level 40something night elf you keep seeing all over the place … yet who always manages to still be 40something? Who are all these people?

With more than 12 million WoW players worldwide, you can bet that logging in means rubbing elbows with people who live and play in very different circumstances from your own. From X to Y, from X to Y, only WoW Insider’s 15 Minutes of Fame brings you a complete sampler of the personalities and passions behind the avatars that shared your screen in 2010. Click into our gallery below for a fresh look at the players we profiled over the past year.

“I never thought of playing WoW like that!” — and neither did we, until we talked with these players, from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Aron “Nog” Eisenberg to an Olympic medalist and a quadriplegic raider. Know someone else we should feature? Email lisa@wow.com.

15 Minutes of Fame: Researcher Nick Yee digs into the numbers, people behind WoW

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own 15 Minutes of Fame.

If you’re into research about the World of Warcraft and the world of MMORPGs, the name Nick Yee will be instantly recognizable. A research scientist at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Yee is well known in WoW circles for his work on The Daedalus Project, an online survey of MMORPG players that’s yielded profiles of gamers and the gaming life that are ripe for the picking.

Despite a powerhouse academic background, Yee’s no ivory tower recluse. He’s an active WoW player who relishes the happy intersection of game time as background for work time. And while his Daedalus Project has been “in hibernation” for some time now, Yee’s been working on a new study for PARC. We’ll chat with Yee about his work after the break — plus test your knowledge of your fellow WoW players in a special quiz he’s prepared especially for WoW Insider readers spotlighting findings from his new MMORPG research.

Breakfast Topic: Varian Wrynn doesn’t care about Menethil people

Those of you on the U.S. servers have no doubt spent the last evening getting reacquainted with Azeroth. Stormwind and Orgrimmar have been severely damaged. There’s a volcano in Ashenvale. Real estate listings in Gadgetzan are now boasting ocean views. And as for Azshara — well, let’s just say it’s different.

Personally, I found myself transfixed to the wreckage in Menethil. It felt like the disaster was actively happening around me, even though the world inside the game is probably a couple of months removed from the actual act of the shattering. There are an awful lot of sand bags around, but they don’t seem to be helping much. All I can say is that Varian Wrynn is going to have a heck of a time winning the Wetlands’ electoral votes in 2012.

Have you had time to survey the carnage yourself? Which zone’s treatment have you enjoyed the most? What do you think of the new world you find yourself in?
