Breakfast Topic: What’s behind stereotypes about what ladies play in WoW?

While I was taking a well-earned break from a particularly demanding PvP session, I got to thinking. I’d been at a gaming society meeting a few days earlier where I had a discussion with a man about my gaming — principally, PvP. Now, I’m a PvP columnist here at WoW Insider, and I PvP a great deal, so when said man told me that PvP “isn’t something women do,” to say I was a little surprised was an understatement.

So I did what any sane girl would do in 2011 — I went and posted about it on Twitter. I went to another session and emerged to quite a response from various ladies all saying that they PvP or that they knew ladies who did and who wouldn’t be particularly happy to be told that PvP wasn’t something women did.

Anyhow, as I was saying, this provoked some thought. I do think there are gender stereotypes in WoW — mostly, that women heal far more than they do anything else and that almost all tanks are men. As an anthropology student, I’m adept at making sweeping generalizations, and I wouldn’t think for a moment that either of these statements are absolute truths.

However, they do raise questions. First, is there any truth to them at all? Are healers really the group in WoW where female players are most well represented? Are tanks genuinely the role least played by women? And do ladies really make up a far higher percentage of the PvE playerbase than they do the PvP one?

And, of course, the burning question underlying all of the above: If so, why?

Be thankful you don’t have to play these Rejected Darkmoon Faire Minigames

As you might know from our video tour, the new Darkmoon Faire island coming in patch 4.3 is loaded up with carnival-style minigames you can play with purchasable tickets. Faire-goers can look forward to playing games like Tonk Battle, Whack-a-Gnoll, and Ring Toss, but you have to figure … what games did Blizzard consider before adding the ones we get in 4.3? We started guessing on Twitter, then let the WoW Twitter community take over with the #RejectedDarkmoonFaireMinigames hashtag.

Unsurprisingly, you guys killed it. Here are a few of our favorites from the hundreds of entries we got.

Patch 4.3 PTR: Play with and against the Blues in raids and PVP this week

Player vs. Blue? Player w. Blue? You choose! Sapperwix on the PTR forums has revealed two PTR events with the developers to take place this week. The PVP event will be today, Nov. 1, from 3 to 6 p.m. Pacific. The PVE event will feature developers queueing for the Deathwing raid using the Raid Finder and will take place on Friday, Nov. 4, also from 3 to 6 p.m. Pacific.

Developer tests like this are an excellent sign that Patch 4.3 is coming soon, so check out our previous coverage for more info. (For my money, I think Blizzard missed some excellent pun opportunities here. Red vs. Blue? Blue’s Queues? The possibilities are endless!)

See the full posts below.

Play against the Blues
Greetings All!

Tomorrow 11/01/11 the mightiest combatants of Blizzard will once again gallantly stride across the blood-soaked soil of Azeroth. That’s right, we’re doing a Play-with-the-Blues Battlegrounds event on the PTRs!

From 3:00pm-6:00pm PST we’ll be queuing for specific battlegrounds, be online and watch for the server alerts to know where to find us.

Hope to see you online!

Play with the Blues
After you’ve tested your mettle against us during the “Play AGAINST The Blues” event on Tuesday you can follow it up by joining us on the PTR in the fight against Deathwing and his minions!

On Friday 11/04/11 we’ll be online from 3:00pm-6:00pm PST and will be queuing up for Dragon’s Soul raids using the Looking For Raid tool. Queue up using the LFR tool to join us. You will know us by our guilds [Blizzard Horde] & [Blizzard Alliance].

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Review the official patch notes, and then dig into what’s ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing — from astride his back!

Breakfast Topic: Who should play your character in the WoW movie?

Deborah Ann Woll

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

As we all know, there’s the distinct possibility of a World of Warcraft movie some time in the (relatively) near future. Some people are skeptical, some optimistic. Hopefully, it will be an epic tale, full of the flavor and excitement we all feel every time we log in to Azeroth, not a rehashing of stories we’ve known for ages or a bastardization of the hobby we all enjoy so much. Whether it focuses on Horde or Alliance, there will need to be characters of various shapes and sizes, representing the varied peoples of the World of Warcraft. Gnomes, Humans, Trolls and Tauren, the movie presents the opportunity to show the fantasy genre on a scope unseen thus far.

So who would you cast to play your character? Who brings the smarmy wit of the wily rogue, the cold confidence of the devious warlock or the young but arrogant sneer of the proud paladin on your character selection screen?

Since I get first dibs, as the author of this, I’m going to go ahead and stake my claim. My Human protection warrior would be played by Deborah Ann Woll from True Blood. She brings just the right mix of strength, sexiness, and wide-eyed bewilderment to play my common Stormwind girl-gone-heroine.
