Blizzard releases customer support how-to videos

As part of its continued fight against account hacking and account compromise, Blizzard’s customer support department has started a YouTube channel dedicated to hosting how-to videos on security, what to do if your account is hacked, general security tips, and how to use the Battle.net authenticator. Not only are the videos educational and helpful, they are also adorably fun, making security as enjoyable as it possibly can be.

Not only is this an awesome service for Blizzard to put out, the videos offer excellent ideas for online security in general. The tips in the general account security video are great tips to follow, even if you aren’t a gamer. Everyone on the internet should be following these security tips. Good on you, Blizzard, for this awesome community service. I don’t think we can give the customer support guys enough shout-outs.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Look at what’s ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing — from astride his back!

Blizzard looking for “meaningful difference” in expansion releases

World of Warcraft’s expansion cycle is not the norm in the MMO genre. The Blizzard expansion cycle is a new boxed expansion every two years, on average. According to Gameinformer, which got to talk to Tom Chilton at the Gamescom show in Germany last week, Blizzard is on track for a more timely release schedule with World of Warcraft expansions.

Chilton told Gameinformer:

We’ve been able to do it in one sense, but not as much as I would like to in another sense. I would like for all patches to reliably have raid bosses. Our first Cataclysm patch didn’t have raid bosses. From a raider’s persepctive, it probably doesn’t feel any faster than it did before. For us, where the biggest improvement is going to be in this cycle is in the actual expansion release. Traditionally we’ve only been able to do an expansion about every two years. We’re really hoping to make a meaningful difference in that.

Paragon releases heroic Ragnaros 25-man kill video

Paragon earned the high honor of world first heroic Ragnaros kill, downing the Firelord after over 400 attempts on his fight. Heroic mode encounters add something new and difficult to the mix, but it is rare that we see an entirely new phase to an encounter. Paragon’s heroic Ragnaros kill video shows the final stage of the fight, in which Ragnaros submerges into his lava pool and emerges at full strength, where his new legs allow movement all over the encounter room.

The final stage of the fight involves Archdruid Hamuul Runetotem, Malfurion Stormrage, and Cenarius assisting the players in dealing with the entirely new mechanics this new heroic mode phase presents. If you’ve been trying Ragnaros or have killed him, you already have experienced the hilarious Living Meteor ability. In this new phase, meteors must be kited over patches of ice on the ground to freeze them and then players must DPS down meteors to control the amount up at any time. Players are also frantically running around extinguishing ground fires and trapping Ragnaros in roots on the ground. All in all, it looks incredibly fun and challenging, and it’s very nice to see Ragnaros putting his new legs to good use kicking the crap out of guilds across the world.

My favorite part of the video has to be the end, with the custom death animation for Ragnaros. Watch until the very end — it’s worth it. Congratulations again to DREAM Paragon for their heroic first kill and for the awesome video of the accomplshment.

Cryptozoic’s Digital Manga Releases for July

A couple of months ago it was announced that Cryptozoic Entertainment, publisher of the WoW Trading Card Game, would be publishing the Warcraft and Starcraft manga exclusively through its comics reader app. The initial release included Warcraft Legends Vol. 1 and 2, World of Warcraft: Death Knight, and The Sunwell Trilogy Vol. 1: Dragon Hunt. It was also announced that other manga titles would be released over time via the app. Apparently the time for more manga is now, as two new Warcraft titles have just been released to the comics app.

Warcraft Legends Vol. III is a collection of short tales, including the continuing story of Trag Highmountain, first seen in the Sunwell trilogy. Also included is the story I Got What Yule Need, written by New York Times bestselling author Christie Golden, and The Thrill of the Hunt, a story involving Hemet Nesingwary, one of the better known NPCs in game. The Legends series is one of the better ones out there, and at .99 for 160 pages worth of manga, it’s a good deal.

Also released this month is the second book in the class series, World of Warcraft: Mage. This standalone story tells the tale of Aodhan, an apprentice mage whose dreams of making it big as a spellcaster are suddenly and violently interrupted. This volume delves into the story of Aodhan, but it also sheds a little light on the conflict between the blue dragonflight and the Kirin Tor highlighted back in Wrath of the Lich King. Like the other manga available on the app, Warcraft: Mage is also a steal at .99.

All titles are available for purchase through the Cryptozoic Comics App, and the app itself is free for download via iTunes. If you missed any of the manga releases, this is an excellent way to pick them up.

A full 100% of the proceeds generated by this pet purchase will go to help the American Red Cross’s Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami relief efforts, compared to the 50% from previous pets like the Pandaren Monk. The donation process will be ongoing through July 31.
