The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Firelands reputation rewards

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Care and Feeding of Warriors, the column dedicated to arms, fury and protection warriors. Despite repeated blows to the head from dragons, demons, Old Gods and whatever that thing over there was, Matthew Rossi will be your host.

Patch 4.2 is still here. And we’re all rolling through the Firelands, some of us already on heroic modes, some of us still clearing some bosses, others working on the dailies. Something for everyone. Today, we’re going to talk about the loot you can get out of the Firelands without actually getting a single drop from a boss. Some of these rewards require you to kill trash for rep (or even bosses, in the case of Avengers of Hyjal rewards past honored), but others you can get through Marks of the World Tree or even from the Thrall quest line added in patch 4.2.

Before we talk about all that, though, I have to say that if you’re able to raid Firelands, even on a limited schedule, you really should. These are some of the best-designed, most well thought-out boss encounters I’ve seen in years of playing the game. Trash runs are absolutely puggable (and the trash drops are worth pugging for, as last week covered); a coordinated group in 359 epics from tier 11 raids absolutely can do the first four bosses and can probably learn to do Baleroc in a week or two. There’s no reason to avoid this raid. It’s fun, well-designed, and within your grasp. Of the five bosses I’ve now seen, none of them is so easy as to be boring nor so hard as to be daunting.

Now, let’s talk about gear you can get before or just after setting foot in here.

Patch 4.2: Avengers of Hyjal reputation rings

The Avengers of Hyjal is the new raid reputation being introduced with patch 4.2 for raiders daring enough to enter the Firelands and do battle with Ragnaros’ minions. Much like the Ashen Verdict, players will be able to gain rewards with the Avengers as they progress up the reputation tiers. At exalted, ilevel 391 rings will become available in a variety of styles. So far, these rings are available on the PTR:

Blizzard has said that the Avengers of Hyjal faction will work differently from the Ashen Verdict, however, in that they do not want players farming the trash in the Firelands for reputation. Rather, it looks like we will get a system like the Brood of Nozdormu or Hydraxian Waterlords, where after a certain reputation level the only way to increase your standing with the faction is to kill bosses.

The news is already rolling out for the upcoming WoW Patch 4.2! Preview the new Firelands raid, marvel at the new legendary staff, and get the inside scoop on new quest hubs — plus new Tier 12 armor!

Officers’ Quarters: That other guild reputation

Every Monday, Scott Andrews contributes Officers’ Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership. He is the author of The Guild Leader’s Handbook, available now from No Starch Press.

These days, when you say “guild reputation,” most people think of the guild rep grind that’s required to buy items like the Armadillo Pup and the Dark Phoenix. Cataclysm didn’t invent this concept — the expansion simply turned what already exists into a specific number with some fun rewards attached. As long as there have been guilds, there have been players with an opinion about them, and vice versa. This kind of reputation plays a huge role in a guild’s success or failure, particularly when it comes to recruiting. This week, an officer with a rep problem asks how to deal with a handful of former members who are sabotaging the guild’s recruiting efforts.

Hey Scott,

So my guild is fairly new (about 3-4 months) we started at the beginning of cataclysm as a guild of friends who wanted to raid on the weekends together. We slowly built up and developed a raider base however it was very difficult to get new players as every other guild on the server was looking for people. We had around 6-7 devoted raiders but those last 3 or so raiding slots left it difficult for us to pug and find members in general who were willing to raid. We went through a variety of members in these slots but most of these people didn’t understand the concept of a “raiding guild.” Some misunderstandings occurred and over the course of our guilds existence we developed about 4-5 “haters.”

Addon Spotlight: Never miss reputation with Auto Tabard

Each week, WoW Insider brings you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs as well as Addon Spotlight, which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond — your addons folder will never be the same. This week: Shackleford.

It’s Addon Spotlight time, ladies and gentlemen. As I sit here at death’s door from the terrible PAX pox with which I have so unceremoniously been bestowed, I try to eek out words and phrases, maybe a quip or two, before death’s cold embrace takes me. I feel as though my short time on this earth and in this existence was worth it, however, because I got to tell you about Auto Tabard.

Patch 4.1 PTR: Heirloom guild tabards aid reputation gains

From the very moment guild reputation and guild leveling were implemented, players have wanted some of their reputation gains to spill over to their alts. Why should your alt have to level their reputation if they’re in the same guild as your main? In patch 4.1, Blizzard still isn’t allowing your reputation to spill over to your alts, but they are implementing the Illustrious Guild Tabard and the Renowned Guild Tabard.

These Bind to Account tabards are likely purchased at revered (Illustrious) and exalted (Renowned) reputations with your guild, making leveling additional characters through guild reputation that much easier. Additionally, assuming you get to keep the item upon leaving a guild, it should make the re-leveling process that much easier. Losing your exalted guild reputation for one reason or another and ending up neutral in your next guild can be a painful, painful thing. These tabards will help soothe that pain.

Judging by the sell-to-vendor prices on Wowhead, the Illustrious tabard will cost 125 gold and the Renowned tabard will cost you 250 gold.

Totem Talk: Enhancement shaman guide to Cataclysm reputation gear

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for elemental, enhancement, and restoration shaman. Do your likes include bladed weapons, the elements, and fights with little to no movement/target switching? So does Josh Myers, new kid on the block and now host of Totem Talk: Enhancement!

From Timbermaw Hold to the Dragonmaw Clan, who you know has always been an important part of the World of Warcraft. When Deathwing smashed the World Pillar, toppled the Stonewrought Dam, and went Death Star on Stormwind’s Park District, he made a whole lot of enemies. From angry earth elementals to druidic defenders of those with “wet little noses,” the Cataclysm of Azeroth has brought about an assortment of new factions for grinding friendship with.

This is WoW Insider’s guide to plotting your enhancement shaman’s reputation progression in the most practical manner possible.

Totem Talk: Restoration shaman guide to Cataclysm reputation gear

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for elemental, enhancement and restoration shaman. Want to be a sultan of swing healing? A champion of Chain Heal? Totem Talk: Restoration will show you how, brought to you by Joe Perez, otherwise known as Lodur from World of Matticus and host of the BDTU: Lore edition podcast

Last week, we consolidated the expansion’s changes for restoration shaman in a Cataclysm 101 post — just the basics there, nothing too fancy quite yet. This week, I fully intended to begin writing restoration guides for the various 5-man dungeons and heroics, but instead, I’d like to take some time and talk about gearing up before you even set foot in dungeons at level 85.

Over the last week, I’ve received a massive influx of email asking about what gear is available through questing and through the various factions. While it is very true that you can receive quite a bit of gear from questing, the reputation rewards are quite stellar. You will gain a sizeable chunk of reputation simply from leveling to 85, so let’s see what gear you can pick up along the way. For today, we’ll keep Mail Specialization in mind and stick with the mail gear, rings and trinkets available from the various factions.

Insane in the Membrane no longer requires Shen’dralar reputation in Cataclysm

Are you one of the true crazies trying to complete Insane in the Membrane before Cataclysm? Things just might have gotten a little easier for you, as Blizzard has officially clarified issues surrounding the achievement. According to this post on the new community site, Insane in the Membrane will still be in Cataclysm, as will the Bloodsail Buccaneer faction. The Shen’dralar, however, are disappearing once Deathwing returns, and as such, their faction has been removed as part of the feat of strength. Read the whole post after the break.
