How to sell Hagara Pick Pockets to rogues

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Gold Capped, in which Basil “Euripides” Berntsen and Fox Van Allen aim to show you how to make money on the Auction House. Check out Fox and Basil’s reboot of Call To Auction, and email Basil with your questions, comments, or hate mail!

There’s a fairly simple way to make gold without professions: Sell summons to a pick-pocketable Hagara to rogues looking to get their legendary quest starter daggers, Vengeance and Fear. These are the most accessible rogue weapons, because aside from picking the pocket of the fourth boss in a raid instance, the quest can be easily completed with a 10k gold and a minimum amount of help. These daggers are the best entry-level options for rogues who PvP or PvE, available as soon as they hit 85 and are capable of completing the quest.

If players are raiders, they’ll probably get it for free just by being in a raid that gets to Hagara; however, if all they do is PvP or casual PvE through the Raid and Dungeon Finders, they won’t be able to get the first leg of the quest finished. Within a few weeks, most rogues who want to start the quest will have started it. Until then, I’ve heard of non-raiding rogues paying as much as 25k for the opportunity to pick Hagara’s pockets.

WoW Moviewatch: I Saw Three Rogues

The holiday season is in full swing, which makes it a great time to celebrate with some WoW-themed holiday music. This is Oxhorn’s I Saw Three Rogues. This is a pretty distant parody video; while it’s obviously evocative of the holiday season, none of the lyrics in the song directly reference Winter’s Veil.

I Saw Three Rogues is actually about three years old, although it only saw video form last year. While we might see something new from Oxhorn, this one’s pretty good to kill time while waiting for Santa to show up.

Visit the WoW Rookie Guide for links to everything you need to get started as a new player, from how to control your character and camera angles when you’re just starting out, to learning how to tank, getting up to speed for heroics and even how to win Tol Barad.

Encrypted Text: A savvy rogue’s guide to the Fall of Deathwing via the Raid Finder

defense of wyrmrest temple

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Feel free to email me with any questions or article suggestions you’d like to see covered here.

The first half of the Dragon Soul raid consists of knocking out a few of Deathwing’s commanders that are attacking Wyrmrest Temple. After toppling the first four bosses of Dragon Soul, we finally see Deathwing face-to-face at the peak of the temple. He’s still too busy to attack us himself, instead sending a couple of his additional underlings our way.

Our first challenge will be overcoming Ultraxion, Deathwing’s favorite twilight dragon. He’s an easy target for rogues and is just about as simple for us as Warlord Zon’ozz. After that, we board an airship to face Warmaster Blackhorn and his Twilight infantry. Finally, we confront Deathwing in two separate encounters, each with its own challenges.

We fight Ultraxion from the roof of Wyrmrest Temple, as he’s too massive to fit inside. He’ll spend most of the encounter cleaving the entire raid, which makes Feint an amazing tool here. Use it on cooldown for the entire fight. Unfortunately for rogues, we’re not able to get behind Ultraxion, due to his positioning over the ledge of the temple roof. While Ultraxion has a buff that prevents him from parrying our frontal attacks, we’re not able to use any positional attacks like Backstab or Ambush.

The introduction of the Raid Finder is one of the biggest features in patch 4.3, and so far it has been everything that we could ask for and more. The queues have been quick, the bosses are tuned just right for the demographic, and the rewards are potent enough to keep the system running. Anyone with decent gear can queue up for a raid, gaining valuable experience and gear. I think the new system is perfect for allowing new raiders to get their feet wet, preparing them for what lies ahead.

Even as a pure DPS class, the Raid Finder queues haven’t been too bad for rogues. Between my own experience and the word on the street (not Greg), queue times are between 15 and 30 minutes, and groups are mostly competent. To a class that’s historically had problems finding a spot in a raid group, the Raid Finder looks like our new best friend. The only bummer is that we can’t start or progress in our legendary quest line in the Raid Finder. In order to maximize our random group’s chance for success, we need to be prepared to do our best.

Rogues are a pure DPS class, which means that all three of our ability trees are DPS-focused. We don’t have the capability to heal or tank, and our ranged attack arsenal is weaker than a hunter’s argument that he deserves a Crystallized Firestone for his Ranseur of Hatred. While there are other pure DPS classes like the mage and warlock, rogue specs have more in common than fire and arcane or destruction and demonology. Our combo point rotation system defines each talent tree’s playstyle, and many of our signature spells are shared between all specs.

Because of the similarities between our specs, there are several concepts that apply to all rogues. I’ve called these axioms, rules, and laws in the past, but the truth is that they’re not always inscribed in stone for everyone to read. I’m talking about the knowledge that established rogues take for granted, as we’re so used to our habits that we forget why we started them in the first place.

The best way to improve your DPS is to attack more. I’m not talking about stacking haste so that your attacks are swift as lightning, but rather about not missing any opportunities. In order for a rogue to deal maximum damage, he needs to be in melee range of something that needs to die at all times.

Staying in melee range can be difficult, as bosses are always tossing out pools of fire and knocking us back into the walls. Rogues need to be tenacious; we need to be vicious dogs that won’t let go of our prey for any reason. We need to hustle between targets, minimizing the amount of time we see “Out of Range” at the top of our screen. In order to ensure that we’re on our targets at all times, we need to learn about how melee mechanics work.

Encrypted Text: Patch 4.2 gear guide for rogues

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Feel free to email me with any questions or article topics you would like to see covered.

If you’re like me, you’ve been spending way too much time in the Dungeon Finder queue lately. With a plethora of new loot available in patch 4.2, we need to earn valor points as fast as possible. Patch 4.2 introduced several new gear options, including new valor point vendors, a new reputation vendor, new leatherworking recipes, and even unlockable vendors. Rather than idling around a capital city, I prefer to work on my daily quests as I wait. I want to minimize the amount of time it takes me to upgrade my gear, and multitasking is the best way to accomplish that.

The most important determining factor in the gear available to you will be whether or not you are raiding in Firelands. A large subset of the new rogue gear is only available to raiders, whether that’s due to requiring a certain reputation that you can only obtain by raiding or the fact that the items only drop from bosses in Firelands. Patch 4.2 brings gear for rogues at every level, including those who aren’t raiding for one reason or another. Your goal should be to identify the gear that is available to you, and then to prioritize that gear and start working towards acquiring it.

Encrypted Text: A rogue’s guide to patch 4.2

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Feel free to email me with any questions or article topics you’d like to see covered!

Rogues have a lot to look forward to when patch 4.2 is released. If you spend most of your time in dungeons or raiding, you’ll be happy to hear about the sizable buffs to all three of our talent trees. Unfortunately for rogues that favor PVP, there are some cooldown changes to Cloak of Shadows and Combat Readiness that won’t be well-received. While I’m not completely satisfied with the size of our buff when compared to our relative position in the DPS pack, our potency in Firelands still remains to be seen.

In addition to the slew of balance changes, we can start salivating over the new gear that will be available. Our tier 12 set has some very fun bonuses, and also some great crafted gear coming up. Our caster rivals will get access to their first legendary weapon since Atiesh, so we’ll have to do our best to keep up. The duration of Blind in PVE is going up to a full minute, giving us two forms of long-term CC in Sap and Blind. As proof that rogues are designed to be the best at what they do, most other CC effects in the game are going to start mirroring Sap. Polymorph and the rest won’t aggro mobs that they’re used on, which should make it far easier to coordinate CC in a PUG. Plus, even if the group manages to somehow mess up CC and starts combat early, we can just use Blind as a stand-in for Sap anyway.

Encrypted Text: A rogue’s resumé

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Feel free to email me with any topic requests or questions you have!

I feel bad for all of the guild leaders who are looking for rogues right now. As the least-played class in the game, we’re already pretty scarce. The fact that we’re usually invisible doesn’t help the situation, either. Have you seen the frenzy that gets into people during Pilgrim’s Bounty? Everyone is roaming the streets with their Turkey Shooters, looking for rogues to snipe. They start by denying that there’s a rogue shortage, claiming that they’ll find us eventually. After a few days of being unable to find a dwarf rogue, they get angry and start cursing us rogues for staying in Stealth all the time. Shortly after, they start bargaining, offering us large sums of gold to just show ourselves for a moment.

The truth is that regardless of how well we’re performing at the moment, rogues are still in demand, due to short supply. Guilds both big and small are looking for assassins and shades to join their rosters. I have personally interviewed several rogue candidates for my own guild, and unfortunately, I am incredibly strict when reviewing their applications. You might be able to trick some hunter into thinking that you’re great by swapping to a combat spec and posting your Halfus parse, but that won’t convince a vigilant rogue. In order to prove yourself amongst your fellow rogue brethren, you need to compose your curriculum mortem. It’s like a curriculum vitae, but with death instead of life. Get it? Rogues kill stuff? Okay, I’ll leave the bad puns to Christian Belt.

Encrypted Text: Rogues need to be number one

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. Feel free to email me with any questions or topic requests.

Back towards the end of Wrath, Blizzard shared with us a lot of information about the then-upcoming Cataclysm expansion. The new 31-point talent trees were unveiled, along with the mastery bonuses for each tree. The mastery bonuses were heralded as the ultimate balancing tool: Developers could tweak these numbers without touching a tree’s talents. Mastery would ensure that any given spec could be tuned independently of the other specs.

The concept made sense, as buffing individual talents had a tendency to cause players to just cross-spec into those newly powerful talents. The other option at Blizzard’s disposal is buffing talents that are deep in a talent tree, which works well since we can only go 10 points deep into our secondary trees.

In order to buff rogues in the upcoming patch 4.2, the developers have used both approaches. Our assassination and combat masteries are both being buffed by 5%. Deep talents in each tree, like Vile Poisons, Savage Combat, and Sanguinary Vein, are also being improved. Finally, subtlety rogues will see Hemorrhage’s base damage improved by 40%, although it remains to be seen how this change affects the spec’s viability.

Even with these buffs, combat and assassination rogues are still slated to be well behind most other classes. Rogues are generally middle-of-the-pack in DPS for most tier 11 bosses, and these changes will just make us “less behind.” Other classes might ask us why being “average” is so bad. Average might be okay for a hybrid, but rogues need to top the meters — not for our egos, but by design.
