Shifting Perspectives: Balance Ruby Sanctum guide

Every Friday, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting balance druids and those who group with them. This week we are sipping some iced tea, sittin’ on our porch swings, enjoying a nice sundae cone and talking about that time we slew the giant, rampaging, pink dragon.

I want to take a spot of a breather from Cataclysm information just for this week. Mostly because I’m slightly frothy at the mouth, which I’ve been told isn’t a good health sign, but more so due to the fact that so much is in the process of being changed right now that going into an in-depth discussion on a topic that’s likely to have every scrap completely altered tomorrow is silly. Perhaps silly is the wrong word, after all that’s never been something to stop me before, so let’s just consider this to be an isolated case — promises that next week will be a real Cataclysm discussion. In light of that, if there’s anything specific that you’d like to see covered, shoot me an email and I’ll see what I can do for you.

Focusing on the here and now, which is actually what this article is about, I’d like to quickly go over the more recent raiding addition Ruby Sanctum. Although I’ve seen mixed reviews of the instance from others, I at least think the instance is a nice little dash of refreshing. It doesn’t hold the same sense of urgency, the same notion that you’re going to be stuck in here for hours upon hours, days upon days (even though many guilds, particularly those working on hard mode, will be) that I get from going into ICC. RS is a nice little cooldown raid; it’s light, fun and refreshing like a cool glass of lemonade. To start us off, we’ll take a quick look at the shiny loots, since that’s what everyone really wants, and then we’ll look into a brief little guide on how to slay the giant purple/pink dragon at the end.

Lichborne: Ruby Sanctum loot for death knights

Welcome to Lichborne, your weekly source for news, guides, tips and opinions on the death knight class.

With the state of pretty much every class on beta in limbo thanks to the forthcoming talent revamp, we’re taking a break from beta stuff to ransack the Ruby Sanctum. Hopefully, we’ll see the new trees on beta in the next week or so, so we have more to work with than speculating on exactly what “signature abilities” everyone will get. In the meantime, we have shiny new loot and a new boss to tackle in the here and now.

The Ruby Sanctum is ostensibly the last major raid of the Wrath expansion, and as such, ostensibly your last chance to get a few extra pieces of gear and uber yourself out before Cataclysm comes along and replaces everything with level 81 quest rewards. There are definitely some pretty prime upgrades to be had here, including a few straight-up best in slot drops, so let’s get going and check out what you can grab.

As with previous gear guides, try to keep your stat weights in mind, and when it comes to the heroic versions of these drops, unless otherwise noted, it’s usually safe to say the same stuff about the heroic version, except even more so. Also, comparisons here are normal to normal, or heroic to heroic. Heroic versions of ICC loot are, for the most part, probably still going edge out normal Ruby Sanctum loot.

Spiritual Guidance: Healing Halion and the Ruby Sanctum

Every weekend, Dawn Moore enjoys drinking her tea English style and writing Spiritual Guidance to the pleasant sound of birds (this is quite fortunate, since she lives in an aviary.) This weekend however, Dawn’s soundtrack is being interrupted by the sound of explosives. What could be the root of this?! Fox Van Allen must have finally teamed up with goblin engineers to foil Dawn’s Sunday column. How will she write for healing priests with that incessant racket?!

This week I’ll be writing about how to traverse the Ruby Sanctum as a healing priest. I know, I know, I promised you all a leveling guide, but for the sake of being timely we’ll have to push it back a week. Forgive me, please?

In the guide I’ll be covering Halion, as well as the three mini-bosses you’ll have to defeat before you can face him. I will also examine priest appropriate loot in the instance and compare it to a few pieces we’ve seen in Icecrown Citadel. Hit the jump and we’ll get started.

Totem Talk: Ruby Sanctum loot for enhancement

Rich Maloy subsists solely on enhancement air. He experiences shortness of breath when offered spellpower gear and is easily confused by spirit and MP5. You can ask him anything about enhance at the Totem Recall roundtable or watch his WoW reality series, Big Crits.

In case you missed it in all the news about the Cataclysm beta, Ruby Sanctum was released into the wild on Tuesday. With a new instance out everyone is asking, “What’s in it for me?” But my question is, “What’s in it for enhancement?”

The short answer is ArP. For a stat that’s going away in a few months, we’re seeing a lot of it in Ruby Sanctum gear from both the 10- and 25-man versions of the raid. Armor penetration (ArP) is not the ideal stat for enhancement. Not ideal, but definitely usable. There are some definite winners among the RS loot — on both 10 and 25.

I’ve created a new enhance gear spreadsheet on Google Docs including the new loot. It’s read-only, so either make a copy to your Google Docs file or save a copy to your desktop as an Excel file. I’ve also included some sample EP values for different levels of play, including EP values derived from the latest Elitist Jerks BiS gear, setup and rotation.

Encrypted Text: Ruby Sanctum gear for rogues

Every Wednesday, Chase Christian of Encrypted Text invites you to enter the world of shadows, as we explore the secrets and mechanics of the rogue class. This week, we discuss the new loot dropping in the Ruby Sanctum.

In one of the worst Patch Tuesdays in recent memory, Blizzard took down a large number of their North American servers for a full 24 hours of maintenance. At the same time, all European servers were offline while patch 3.3.5 was applied and the Real ID system was implemented for our friends across the pond. However, for those lucky enough to have their servers excluded from this massive maintenance window, a surprising gift awaited them. The portal to the Ruby Sanctum was open.

Ruby Sanctum fills the role of being the last salute to Wrath‘s raiding scene before Cataclysm. It’s a short, single-boss instance, designed to start ushering in the lore of Deathwing’s imminent release. Those of us who had a chance to fight against Sartharion will be familiar with this type of dungeon. Since it’s such a small raid, the total loot table is relatively small, and there’s only a few pieces of interest to us leather-wearers. However, the loot that is there is worth some discussion, as it fits into a few very particular roles.

Ruby Sanctum is open [Updated]

Although several realms are still under extended maintenance in preparation for Cataclysm, Patch 3.3.5‘s Ruby Sanctum is currently open for business. Players can enter the instance at this time and kill the trash and minibosses, and Halion is able to be engaged. We’ve not yet received word on whether or not he’s killable, or whether anyone has killed him. It’s likely that this was unintentional.

We’ll keep you posted, though. Now would probably be a good time to brush up on the dungeon’s final boss with WoW.com’s Guide to Halion!

Update 6:29 p.m. EDT: The opening of Ruby Sanctum might be a bug, but nonetheless, it’s up and running. We have staff who are running it both on normal and heroic mode on the live servers. Blizzard is being coy about it, so who knows… either way the boss is up and can be engaged right now.

Update 6:39 p.m. EDT: Nethaera confirms that this isn’t a bug: Ruby Sanctum is open, despite several battlegroups being down for another day.

Blizzard releases Patch 3.3.5 Ruby Sanctum storyline

While you’re waiting for Patch 3.3.5 to hit the live servers, you can check out Blizzard’s latest preview of the final raid instance in Wrath of the Lich King — the Ruby Sanctum. European Community Manager Wryxian just dropped by the forums to link the Under Development page for Ruby Sanctum, which contains some new images and (perhaps most importantly, for some) the storyline behind the instance.
“Next to nothing is known about who might be responsible for the assault on the Ruby Sanctum: the black dragonflight is not known for forgiveness or patience, but its numbers in Northrend are surely limited. What force would be powerful or daring enough to assail the stronghold of these ancient wyrms? How could such an enemy sneak by the temple’s guardians undetected? Surely an approaching air or ground force would have been caught by Wyrmrest Temple’s defenders.

For the moment, the members of the accord and their allies must assume the worst scenario that they can conceive of: that all life within the Ruby Sanctum rests on the precipice of extinction, and only immediate intervention will prevent the red dragonflight from being decimated. They’ll find that the truth is far worse.”

I think some of us know the truth already! If you’re raring to go for a trip into the Ruby Sanctum after reading this, prepare yourself by checking out our guide to Halion, the instance’s grand poobah.
