Getting the tattoo wasn't necessarily the headliner, but the fact that the tat is of his World of Warcraft character riding horseback on a dragon. That's devotion. 1. Free BYU turnovers. A mark left from a game all BYU fans would like to forget.

Breakfast Topic: Have you ever seen anyone RP a peon?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

Let’s face it — most roleplayers are heroes, villians, peerless veterans, or other Mary Sues. We want to feel awesome from time to time, and games let us do that. But after awhile, it gets old. Every guild leader you meet seems to be the head of a secret organization, the leader of one of Thrall’s elite group of warriors, or a famous mercenary group that, for some reason, only works for the Alliance.

But they’re not all like that. I’m not on an RP realm, but I’ve had a guildie who has been lightly roleplaying a simple Undead priest hell-bent on making babies with a Dwarf warrior. They both keep things within the game’s context — they don’t speak each other’s language but (not so) secretly try to meet up and communicate. It ends rather badly when the guilds shows up to kill the enemy lover, but the two still press on, shouting in Common and Orcish and emoting strange gestures in order to better try to express their love.

I’ve had people from RP servers try to get me to rally to their cause in the random Dungeon Finder, but they get shot down fast most of the time, and … well, the game already calls me a hero every other quest, so it’s lost its shine. However, when my guildie cries about seeing her potential Dwarven lover with another woman, then later finding out it was his evil twin, I can’t help but chuckle a bit and even do some very light roleplaying myself.

Have you ever met someone who RPed something unique? A seer who was always wrong? A farmer’s guild? A hard-working peon?

WoW Moviewatch: As seen on G-TV

As seen on G-TV was the entry into the Cataclysm commercial contest by Firebolt Productions. This is the tale of a pair of goblin products guaranteed to help make you irresistible to the ladies … and to worgen. Respectively. If the product can make you the apple of every female worgen’s eye, then I guess that’s even better.

Breakfast Topic: Haven’t you seen that someplace before?

There are all kinds of little real-life references here and there in World of Warcraft — pop culture seems to be something that is referred to heavily and often. But it’s the more obscure references, the ones that point at things my character has done or accomplished, that leave me with a smile on my face, like the one in the picture above. In the first aid building in Dalaran, several injured NPCs are lying in bed, along with a Wounded Dalaran Serpent. Most players don’t really give these characters a second look; they merely turn in their fishing daily and hightail it to the next instance or raid.

For those who have played through Silverpine while leveling, however … well, those NPCs should look familiar. They’re the ones you beat up while you were out there looking for Dalaran Pendants at the behest of Shadow Priest Allister. Or maybe you weren’t questing; you were just looking for that elusive Black Tabby Cat and these guys got in your way. Regardless, all three of them are thankfully far too out of it to recognize you. I wonder what would happen if they ever woke up and said anything to the authorities?

What weird little reference makes you smile, every time you see it? Have you seen any other NPCs that reference places you’ve been and things you’ve accomplished? What’s the most obscure reference you’ve found in WoW?

Shifting Perspectives: A limited number of people know the troubles I’ve seen

Every Tuesday, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting feral/restoration druids and those who group with them. This week, we equivocate on the best means of filling a bottomless pit.

Beta build 12759 dropped early Saturday morning, and with it the introduction of mastery and quite a few changes to the feral and restoration specs. I think Blizzard may even have fixed some of the issues with feral damage, but the newest bug on the block is making that a little difficult to tell. The default scrolling combat text is now broken — you can’t see how much damage or healing you’re doing to hostile mobs or friendly players, respectively — so at best, you’re confined to guesses based on how much health the mob’s losing when you hit it. For me, this requires squinting at a very small portion of a laptop screen with my nose two inches from the monitor, and I’ll be damned if I’ll wind up financing the purchase of another Maserati for my ophthalmologist.
