Gold Capped: Selling valor point gear

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Gold Capped, in which Basil “Euripides” Berntsen and Fox Van Allen aim to show you how to make money on the Auction House. Check out Fox and Basil’s reboot of Call To Auction, and Email Basil with your questions, comments, or hate mail!
Every single content patch, Blizzard turns the tables on gold makers and, for a brief period of time, allows any player to make tens of thousands of gold by selling valor point-bought BoE gear. We’ve all seen the ads in trade of people looking to buy them or sell them, but most people focus on their own gear first and only think about selling them once they’ve gotten a few upgrades. Is this unwise?
What if I told you that you could get several thousand gold and still have as much valor gear at the end of the month as your guildie who didn’t sell a single BoE? It’s all about timing. The valor point weekly cap is 1,000, and in the beginning of the week that valor BoEs are available for purchase, the prices are extremely high. They stay high for a few weeks but quickly plummet as people start to use more points to buy gear for selling. They bottom out eventually when people stop having upgrades available for valor.

Gold Capped: Selling PvP and leveling gear

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Gold Capped, in which Basil “Euripides” Berntsen aims to show you how to make money on the Auction House. Email Basil with your questions, comments, or hate mail!
If you can make blue PVP and leveling gear, you can make a lot of gold. Blacksmithing is one of my most profitable businesses, and almost all of the money I’ve made is from that gear. Sure, belt buckles are great cash when there’s no massive undercutting war, but every night a couple of people kit out their plate alts with my Hardened Obsidium gear or start a PVP set with my Bloodthirsty Pyrium gear.
There are three professions that you can use for this market: blacksmithing, leatherworking, and tailoring. All three of them have gear that is appealing for alts and new characters; however, be aware that some of this gear is made by people leveling the trade skill and isn’t worth making.

Gold Capped: Selling pets for fun and profit

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Gold Capped, in which Fox Van Allen and Basil “Euripides” Berntsen aim to show you how to make money on the auction house. Feed Fox’s ego by emailing him or tweeting him at @foxvanallen.
I will admit, I’m a sucker for collecting in-game pets. Maybe it’s because I like having someone following me around, even when I’m soloing content. Maybe it’s just because of the obsessive-compulsive Pokemon instinct, where I gotta catch em all regardless of the consequences. Maybe it’s just because I like tiny animals that depend on me.
I’m far from alone — collecting pets in WoW is serious business. There are achievements involved. Exclusive bonus pets. People have even created websites devoted to the hobby of collecting vanity pets.
People love pets. And people will spend lots of money on the things they love, which makes making, buying, and reselling pets a very profitable endeavor indeed.

The Lawbringer: WoW’s immune system and the gold selling virus
Pop law abounds in The Lawbringer, your weekly dose of WoW, the law, video games and the MMO genre. Mathew McCurley takes you through the world running parallel to the games we love and enjoy, full of rules, regulations, pitfalls and traps. How about you hang out with us as we discuss some of the more esoteric aspects of the games we love to play?
Security is a lot like the human immune system — the longer you are exposed to the dangers of security intrusion and attacks against you, the easier it is to learn how to defend against new attacks. The video game industry has been the target of hackers of all types since its inception, with hacks and leaks dotting the gaming landscape. Gold farmers and gold hackers are the relatively new kids on the block, but have been fighting a long battle with Blizzard as both sides push and pull to achieve their goals. Blizzard is in a unique position where they have the knowledge of years of attacks behind them. What happens when the new guy enters the genre and has no such immunity or experience behind them, despite hackers knowing exactly what to do?
Have you ever read Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs, and Steel? No? Well, it’s a pretty darn good read, and you already like to read (as evidenced by your eyes’ sliding back and forth across the screen at this very moment), so pick up this Pulitzer Prize-winning look at the ascension of western civilization. The very basic (and I mean, extremely distilled version) thesis of the book is that western civilization achieved dominance over the world through serendipitous geographic factors and weaponry, diseases to which many were not immune, and central, powerful organization. I’m concerned with the germs part of the equation.
What does any of this have to do with the massively multiplayer genre and WoW in particular? Well, a lot, in fact.

Beta test weekends set for Star Wars: The Old Republic in September An investor report from Electronic Arts shows that the game will be opening up special beta weekend events for players to get a glimpse of the game starting in September. While the report doesn’t say if these tests will be open or closed, they certainly bring to mind the beta weekends that RIFT popularized, with a limited number of players but a great deal of freedom in access. |

Gold Capped: Selling glyphs in Cataclysm, part 1

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Gold Capped, in which Basil “Euripides” Berntsen aims to show you how to make money on the auction house. Email Basil with your questions, comments, or hate mail!
When Cataclysm launched, it came with a design change for the glyph system. Whereas players who wanted to change glyphs previously had to buy a new one to overwrite an existing one, they could now use Dust of Disappearance to overwrite their glyphs with any of their learned glyphs.
I split markets in WoW into two segments:
- Items that players will only buy once per character
- Items that are bought multiple times per character
While glyphs are now firmly in the first category, honestly, they seemed as if they were there anyway. The vast majority of glyph demand, throughout Wrath of the Lich King, was not generated by elite raiders or PvPers keeping stacks of commonly used glyphs in their bags so they could micro-optimize, but rather from people leveling new characters. The demand for glyphs remains strong, and that means someone is making money.
