Patch 4.3 PTR: Build 14791 hits servers

Another PTR push, and again Wowheadnews is there to explore it. What surprises does this latest build conceal? Well, for starters, there are new strings for the Dragon Soul raid’s maps, new icons for a Deathwing raid dagger and a PVP shield, and a host of ability changes aimed at spreading the new attack power for melee. Reverberation seems to be taking a hit on Wind Shear’s cooldown reduction, most likely to fall in line with a new cooldown on the spell.

It doesn’t look to be a huge patch, but it’s definitely a new build. Head over to Wowheadnews to check out the datamining.

Brace yourselves for what could be some of most exciting updates to the game recently with patch 4.3. Review the official patch notes, and then dig into what’s ahead: new item storage options, cross-realm raiding, cosmetic armor skinning and your chance to battle the mighty Deathwing — from astride his back!

Instance servers busted, Lord Ahune to blame

In between the weather knocking out my power here in Milwaukee, WI, I managed to sit in the dungeon queues long enough to discover that … they’re broken! Thanks to Lord Ahune, instance servers are overall stressed beyond capacity despite Blizzard’s constant upgrades over the years.

Vrakthris
It looks like overall it is due to the influx of everyone running the Fire Festival encounter, plus arenas, and normal dungeons.

http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2712201373

Our Realm Technicians are looking into it and making what adjustments they can to improve connectivity and performance. If more information becomes available we’ll be certain to pass it along.

We have no ETA on when the situation will be resolved, but the most recent post in the above-linked thread was a mere 5 minutes ago as of this writing, so it continues to be an ongoing issue.

The Lawbringer: A primer on private servers

Pop law abounds in The Lawbringer, your weekly dose of WoW, the law, video games and the MMO genre. Running parallel to the games we love and enjoy is a world full of rules, regulations, pitfalls and traps. How about you hang out with us as we discuss some of the more esoteric aspects of the games we love to play?

The history of private MMO servers goes back to the heyday of the massively multiplayer, when the concepts of these virtual worlds were still in their formative stages. World of Warcraft private servers, also called emulated servers, boast numbers in the thousands, usually running off donations and providing a limited amount of the full WoW experience due to the nature of the reverse server engineering and implementation needed to run the game. One thing is for certain, though: Using the game client to connect to an emulated server is against the World of Warcraft EULA and cuts into Blizzard’s profits.

Patch 4.0.6 being deployed on PTR servers

Patch 4.0.6 is being deployed on the PTR servers starting today, it looks like. We have confirmed reports of it from some trusted individuals (and MMO-Champion has already got its hands on the client files), but the actual client is not able to be downloaded from the website yet. We think if you have a previous PTR client, you can update that to the latest patch and check out the changes.

As for the changes themselves, right now, indications are that they are a lot of the tooltip changes and other minor tweaks prompted by the last month of hotfixes. Remember that just because a change goes up with a hotfix, a lot of times, the in-game wording won’t be able to be updated until a client patch.

And just to be super-clear: This isn’t patch 4.1. There are no indications that there are any new raids or anything else with this patch.

More throughout the day as we get it in!

Free realm transfers to lower population servers

It’s that time of year again–the time when certain realms are filled to the brim, making them nay unplayable. The release of Cataclysm has hit specific US realms hard, and Blizzard is offering to help balance out population issues. To make life easier on these servers, Blizzard is offering free realm transfers to lower population servers.

The high-populations realms are:

  • Barthilas (Oceanic-PvP)
  • Blackrock (US-PvP)
  • Frostmourne (Oceanic-PvP)
  • Illidan (US-PvP)
  • Kel’Thuzad (US-PvP)
  • Kil’jaeden (US-PvP)
  • Tichondrius (US-PvP)

The destination realms are as follows:

  • Altar of Storms (US-PvP)
  • Arathor (US-PvE)
  • Fenris (US-PvE)
  • Garrosh (US-PvE)
  • Grizzly Hills (US-PvE)
  • Gul’dan (US-PvP)
  • Gundrak (Oceanic-PvP)
  • Nazjatar (US-PvP)
  • Shattered Halls (US-PvP)
  • The Forgotten Coast (US-PvP)

Blizzard has stated that while these are still free, they are subject to end once the destination realms fill up. So if you or your guild is planning a move, you should start now to avoid any complications. Most questions on free realm transfers should be on this handy FAQ. As always, a realm transfer to any of the ones not listed still requires a paid character transfer.

Cataclysm launches in Europe, servers currently down

In what may be the least surprising event of the year, Europe’s World of Warcraft servers have gone down almost immediately after the expansion’s launch in that region. Even Europe’s Battle.net web resources appear to be down for maintenance (or are merely offline due to overwhelming load).

How long will this downtime last? We’re not sure, but we will do our very best to keep you updated on European server status. European players, if you have any tips or updates on your server’s status, don’t be afraid to contact us via our tip line. We love to hear from you!
