Breakfast Topic: Has the time come for Outland story updates?

After Chris Metzen’s seeming joke at BlizzCon concerning the possible reappearance of Illidan in future WoW storylines, it occurred to me that we really haven’t seen much of Outland or its storylines lately. Well, maybe that’s not fair — if you’re leveling a character between 58 and 68, I imagine you’ve seen all too much of Outland and are heartily sick of the whole continent and its dungeons by now. Still, The Burning Crusade featured some great stories, and if Illidan ever does come back, there are a few people I hope he’ll (metaphorically) drag alongside him.

The two that come immediately to mind are the Netherwing Dragonflight and the Ashtongue Deathsworn. What’s up with the Netherwing since Deathwing’s demise? Do they even know about it or what’s happened with the Aspects? And what’s going on with Akama now? I’d argue that he, more than Kael or Vashj or Illidan, was the greatest and most compelling character of WoW‘s first expansion, and he had one hell of a unique model. The brains behind the Ashtongue’s high-stakes Batman Gambit (warning: TV Tropes link) has got to be up to something these days, and if Blizzard ever revamps Outland questing, I hope it gives players a peek.

Then again, that’s assuming that yanking Illidan back from the dead is even a good idea to begin with (is it?) or that Outland stories can be made relevant to their modern counterparts. Thoughts, readers?

WoW Moviewatch: Jaina’s Clover Story

Jaina Proudmoore isn’t always the most respected lore figure in WoW. I definitely tend to be on the hater side of the Jaina fence; it bothers me that she tends to respond to men’s actions, rather than initiate actions of her own. Still, Jaina is definitely an important person in the game; she’s central to many of the plots that drove The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King.

Inspired by a fictional drama created by Korean artist Charalue, Lohaf created this amazing video called Jaina’s Clover Story. Whether you like Jaina or not, take the time to watch this video. The art and music both bring a sense of haunted longing to the story. Overall, it’s just a gorgeous video. The editing and effects were created by Lohaf, and the art and story belong to Charalue.

Know Your Lore: Story development and why Theramore should burn

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

One of the most contentious pieces of information to come out of BlizzCon this year was the rumor that Theramore, Alliance stronghold on the coast of Kalimdor and home to Jaina Proudmoore, would come under attack and possibly be destroyed come time for the next expansion. This created a flurry of indignant outcry from Alliance players, who thought that once again, the Alliance was being treated unfairly and the Horde was the obvious favorite to all.

This outcry was so loud and boisterous as to warrant a response on the issue from Zarhym, who reassured players that there was much to see with the story behind the next expansion, and this was merely a first step. Yet the outcry continues, and the sheer overwhelming negativity and cynicism launched at Blizzard by players is an almost palpable cloud.

To all of you, I say this: Relax. It’s going to be OK. Take a deep breath, and come with me on a journey into the back-end and construction of an evolving world, and discover why Theramore has to be torched into oblivion.

The morals of the WoW Annual Pass story

Pop law abounds in The Lawbringer, your weekly dose of WoW, the law, video games and the MMO genre. Mathew McCurley takes you through the world running parallel to the games we love and enjoy, full of rules, regulations, pitfalls and traps. How about you hang out with us as we discuss some of the more esoteric aspects of the games we love to play?

After last week’s Lawbringer about what happens to the rewards you’ve accumulated as part of the WoW Annual Pass, many people began sending in questions and comments about the ability to cancel and the nature of agreeing to a year of World of Warcraft service. What many don’t realize or just didn’t consider was that the WoW Annual Pass is really, truly, a commitment to WoW for a year that also comes with some extras. While you can pay off the year commitment monthly, the commitment stays in place.

People emailed me many different questions and stories about the WoW Annual Pass that I hope I can help with or at least put into some perspective. The ultimate conclusion, for me anyway, is that the WoW Annual Pass is such a new thing, such a different thing, that many people are not accustomed to the way it works, especially after pressing that button and locking in their account for a year.
