Breakfast Topic: How many rolls did it take to get your character right?

Character selection screen

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.

A lot of players took a few swings to get their characters right. You might find that that first mage you rolled doesn’t really synch with your desire to stab an Ogre with that sword. That Human might have been a bit bland for a game where you could be a goat with face tentacles from space, or a walking slab of USDA-approved beef. I know several people who started playing at the bequest of their friends, made a character, leveled it for a while, only to get the message: “I’m sorry, but your friends are on another server!” It can be a bit jarring, especially if you’ve leveled into the 40s or 50s when a sizable time investment has been made, but perhaps not enough to justify paying for a server or faction transfer. Mistaken class choices can only be rerolled.

I lucked out. My friend who got me into WoW told me exactly which server and faction to start on before I downloaded the trial account. I picked a Human paladin because I loved paladins in Diablo 2 and started on my voyage. The ability to tank fed into my natural tendency to melee things, and sword and shield has always been my favorite aesthetic weapon choice. Others in my guild were less fortunate. Our mage, who played a paladin in beta, rolled a paladin on live servers, only to find that it was completely different than the class he fell in love with in the beta test. He traipsed through a rogue, priest, and hunter before he got around to maining his mage. Our Draenei enhance shaman started out as a Blood Elf paladin who didn’t make it past level 40.

How about you? Is your main your first toon?

Around Azeroth: You can’t take it with you

stormcrow on top of queen's grave

So you want me to get off the queen’s memorial, Mr. Cryptkeeper? Listen up, bub. I’m a crow. Hanging around cemeteries looking ominous is kind of my thing. I’m certainly not planning on switching to cat form, stealthing, and then looting Queen Tiffin’s tomb of the thousands of gold worth of jewels and treasure buried with her, if that’s what you’re suggesting. Ow! Stop hitting me with that broom! This is a public space, and you’ll be hearing from my lawyer! (Thanks to Capboom of Order of Time on Eldre’Thalas [US-A] for the screenshot!)

Breakfast Topic: Raid Finder, Take Me Away …

The introduction of the raid finder in patch 4.3 probably means little to players who raid on a weekly basis with their guild. You get on at a pre-designated time and attend the raid. Sure, it might be great for alts or doing older content, but for those of us who have stuck with our old guilds, trying in vain to grab at embersilk tatters; it could be a real guild saver.

I have been running a guild which re-formed at the beginning of Cataclysm. I have watched players leave by the score to join higher level guilds. They want in for the perks and the mere chance that they may be selected to be an alternate for heroic or new content, even if it’s only once a week. Given our shifting player base, we have not been able to hold on to a full team that is raiding consistently. Our ability to progress through content has suffered. It seems most of the time our new members either don’t have the time to raid, or have no experience and very little willingness to put in the time to learn.

So what does the raid finder mean for us? The way I see it in my wildest dreams is – autopilot.

Hacker groups tried to take down WoW … and failed

luzlsec

Given all the recent hacking, could WoW be hacked? In an article posted today at Digital Spy, Lead Game Designer Tom Chilton replies that attempts have been made recently, but Blizzard came through unharmed.

While the question and answer doesn’t specifically say LulzSec or Anonymous, I think it’s safe to assume LulzSec is the group in question, given the recent high-profile attacks on U.S. government sites and other MMOs, like EVE Online.

Most of LulzSec’s work has been focused on DDoS attacks and breaking into servers to create “lulz.” During their most recent spree, rumors abounded that WoW was a target; however, nothing came of it. It would now appear nothing came of it thanks to Blizzard’s security measures.

Tom Chilton
Several major gaming studios have fallen victim to hackers of late. What measure are Blizzard taking to ensure that WoW is not hit?

We have always tried to be as diligent as we possibly can when it comes to security. Certainly when hacking was going on with other companies recently there were numerous attempts against ourselves also. Fortunately, our security was good enough, so we didn’t lose data or anything like that.

We always put a high priority on security, but that’s not to say you can ever be impregnable. We’re not resting on our laurels saying ‘they can’t get us’. It’s always a possibility, and we take it very serious, but so far, so good.

Around Azeroth: Take the long way home

The morning after the annual Horde/Alliance dance party in the Plaguelands is always a bit awkward. This hungover blood elf and human are desperately trying to avoid each other’s gaze on the long “carriage ride of shame” home to their respective cities. Sitting between them? A vast silence.
