Around Azeroth: You make me feel like a natural tauren

Some people are just so darn proud of their transmogrification outfits, they submit their picture to Around Azeroth to show it off. “This armor set is from all three expansions and was a pain in the behind to put together,” writes Phyzik of Ragin Cajuns on Firetree (US-H). “That helm alone — a plate wolf mask? But so very worth it. All tauren are nature-lovers, not just the druids — and sometimes, a bear just isn’t as intimidating as a bull in plate. Try scorching this green pasture, Deathwing!”

Jaw-dropping tauren cosplay is larger than life

World of WarCrafts spotlights art and creativity by WoW players, including fan art, cooking, comics, cosplay, music, fan fiction and more. Sample the whole spectrum on our Arts and Crafts in WoW page.

Just how tall would a tauren be, if one suddenly appeared in real life? Monstrously huge, apparently! While we’ve had submissions from plenty of female cosplayers over the past couple of months, we haven’t seen anything from the male side of the spectrum, and I was delighted to open my inbox and see the above photo of tauren warrior Mokkun, fully realized and come to life. This gigantic costume is didn’t make an appearance at BlizzCon this year — instead, it made its first showing at WindyCon, a science fiction convention in Illinois.

The best part about all of this? It was a family project, of sorts. Mokkun’s mother and father both play WoW and got him into the game, and his mother created the costume. Meant to be a stage piece rather than an up-close, detailed production, the costume still manages to impress. But don’t take my word for it — follow after the break for a few words from Malkinius, Mokkun’s father!

All the World’s a Stage: Plot points for tauren roleplayers

All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. In World of Warcraft, that player is you! Each week, Anne Stickney brings you All the World’s a Stage with helpful hints, tips and tricks on the art of roleplay in WoW.

The Horde has experienced a number of dramatic changes in the Cataclysm expansion. In vanilla, the Horde was struggling, largely due to a lack of resources. In Cataclysm, largely due to Garrosh Hellscream’s efforts, the Horde has expanded its borders. With the help of the goblins, Azshara is being mined for a wealth of resources, and land is being grabbed all over Kalimdor. Things are beginning to look up for the Horde — well, if you’re in Orgrimmar. Elsewhere, the land is riddled with turmoil and tragedy.

If you’re roleplaying a tauren, the events of Cataclysm are a bitter pill to swallow. A leader has been lost, entire settlements have been wiped from the map, racial infighting between the Grimtotem and the tauren of Thunder Bluff continues to rage. Yet in between it all are moments of hope — and it’s up to roleplayers to decide whether to wallow in the sorrow, fight back in fury, or simply try and keep an optimistic amidst it all.

Know Your Lore: Tauren origins and tinfoil hats

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

Where, exactly, do tauren come from? Yes, there’s the old standby about a mommy tauren and a daddy tauren — but in a world where some beings trace their origins back to stone constructs and ancient curses while others are native and still others were altered by the Well of Eternity, the question of where a people originated can be an important and convoluted one.

The most recent Ask Creative Development thread from the official forums managed to cover a lot of subject matter, from Elune and her relationship with the Naaru to whether Forsaken priests could actually blow themselves up by channeling too much of the Holy Light. But the question and answer that most interested me was the following:

Q: What races were on Azeroth before the coming of the titans?

A: Besides the elementals, the only known sentient races on Azeroth when the titans’ forces arrived to subdue the Old Gods were the trolls, the race known as “faceless ones,” and the aqir. Due to the Old Gods’ war against the titans, as well as the extensive terraforming that followed the war’s conclusion, records of what races existed before even the Old Gods’ arrival have likely been lost forever.

Anne already discussed this to a degree, but I wanted to take a longer look at the tauren, their history and mythology, what they seem to believe about their origins, and why it might matter to this question. Where did the tauren come from?

Please remember the rules. This is all speculation, and while I try and build it on the framework of the lore we’re supplied in game, I’m going to end up somewhere that is absolutely not at all in game.

All the World’s a Stage: Tauren and timelines in roleplay

All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. In World of Warcraft, that player is you! Each week, Anne Stickney brings you All the World’s a Stage with helpful hints, tips and tricks on the art of roleplay in WoW. Have questions about roleplaying, or roleplaying issues? Email me — I’m always open to suggestions!

Last week, we discussed the timelines of gnomes and dwarves, two races that recently discovered their roots. Though the dwarves and gnomes were originally Titan creations, today we’re going to talk about a race that has simply been here since the beginning — the tauren. Much like the night elves, the tauren have a gigantic chunk of history that is simply … missing, though the tauren have more of an explanation for that absence of information than their night elf counterparts.

For tauren roleplayers, however, the past isn’t really an issue so much as current events — and the tauren race has a lot to think about. The tauren have often been thought of as the “nicest” of the Horde races, peaceful and generally kind to all. That’s what makes what happens to the tauren race in Cataclysm twice as bitter — their people turned on, their leader killed in cold blood, and their home under siege. Despite all this, the tauren remain staunch allies of the Horde, willing to lay down their lives for honor.

Know Your Lore: Baine, son of Cairne, chief of the Bloodhoof tauren

The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You’re playing the game, you’re fighting the bosses, you know the how — but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

The son is not the father, but the son does not try to be. Baine, son of Cairne, now leads the tauren of Mulgore from Thunder Bluff. While we take no praise away from the old bull, now is the time to acknowledge the new, to celebrate the spirit and strength of Baine. Growing to adulthood in the shadow of so great a figure, Baine has grown from a callow youth to a steady leader and finally to the shu’halo who planned and executed the deliverance of his people from Magatha and her Grimtotem.

It was Baine who defeated the rebel tribe of Grimtotems and yet showed mercy when his father’s ultimate murderer came under his judgment. It was Baine who chose to forgo revenge for Garrosh Hellscream’s role in his people’s loss, in his own bereavement. He could have challenged Garrosh, and without any elder crones to poison the orc warchief’s weapon, he most likely could have crushed Hellscream under his furious hooves. He chose not to. He chose his people’s benefit, and the benefit of the Horde they are the heart and soul of, over the vengeance he could have sought. He chose others over himself.

Baine Bloodhoof learned his lessons at his father’s side, yes. But do not take away from him his stepping out from such a great shadow. It was Baine who in the hour of greatest need stepped forth into An’she’s light, saved his people, saved his father’s dream, and preserved bonds of fellowship that would not have been hard to tear asunder.

Let us celebrate the life of Baine of the Bloodhoof tauren.

New Level 80 Elite Tauren Chieftans song: Warriors of Azeroth

As a BlizzCon attendee, I was a little disappointed that the Level 80 Elite Tauren Chieftains weren’t there with a new song. That has now been remedied, as Wowhead has exclusive footage of their newest song, Warriors of Azeroth. This was shot at the Cataclysm launch event.

Sung by the metalhead and art lead Samwise Didier, this rocking new tune is an ode to all those who would don their armor for the greater good — the warrior. Horde or Alliance; it doesn’t matter — those who grab their axes, hammers and swords, and rush headlong into battle — this song is for you. So say thanks to your tanks, give your arms warrior a hug, and grab a drink for your favorite fury. Kick back and enjoy!
