Dissociation Through Gaming

I try to engage in deep philosophical thinking, but it ends up going nowhere, as I get lost in gaming, anywhere from 2 minutes of Minecraft to 12 hours of World of Warcraft. I end up losing my sense of time which forces me to rely on external alarms to

Spiritual Guidance: Shadow priesting through the Hour of Twilight

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. On Wednesdays, shadow priesting expert Fox Van Allen comes from out of the shadows to bask in your loving adoration. He is also scientifically proven more beautiful than boomkin blogger Tyler Caraway.

Players of World of Warcraft had been clamoring for quite some time: “We love escort quests! Give us more escort quests! We want a dungeon that’s nothing but one big escort quest!” Well, good news, person who doesn’t exist and never will — Blizzard designed an instance just for you!

Hour of Twilight is pretty much one big long escort quest involving Thrall. Dude’s trying to deliver the Dragon Soul to Wyrmrest Temple, and a whole bunch of bad guys are trying to stop him. A whole bunch of bad guys with loot. I think that’s the part I cared about the most. The loot. Saving the future was merely a side effect.

Getting the loot requires you to put up with a lot — one of the most annoying fights in Cataclysm, in my opinion. I’m talking of course about the Asira Dawnbreaker fight. Thankfully, though, her shadow priest frustrating silences are avoidable. Sort of.

Around Azeroth: When you walk through the garden, you better watch your back

It’s always a good idea to show the young and innocent that even the most beautiful of places can be destroyed in an instant if an angry dragon wills it. It saves them from having their hearts broken later. “Deathwing had just torched Uldum and I was happily checking out the devastation from above with my Guardian Cub in tow, and I felt my cub should have a memento of the occasion,” writes submitter Justin. “However, it is with sadness that I must report Harrison Jones did survive.”

Spiritual Guidance: Through a Glass, Darkly: Getting the legendary, part 1

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Spiritual Guidance for discipline, holy and shadow priests. On Wednesdays, shadow priesting expert Fox Van Allen comes from out of the darkness to bask in your loving adoration (and say really controversial stuff, apparently).

Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa’s Rest. With patch 4.2, our own legendary came at last.

The power of the weapon is absolutely unmatched. By virtue of the staff’s stats, it’s the shadow priest’s best-in-slot weapon for patch 4.2 and likely for patch 4.3 as well. Beyond that, though, Dragonwrath is worth thousands of extra DPS by virtue of its spell-duplication proc alone. And did I mention that it can also turn you into a giant friggin’ blue dragon? Why wouldn’t you want this thing?

But like everything worth doing, getting the Dragonwrath doesn’t come easy. To score this epic, you need to put in your time in the Firelands, beat down some bosses, and then undergo Through a Glass, Darkly, the hardest solo quest your shadow priest will ever suffer. Are you ready?

Arcane Brilliance: Optimizing your mage’s gear through Rawr

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Arcane Brilliance for arcane, fire and frost mages. This week, we’re talking about what is arguably the game’s most trusted gear optimization program: Rawr. Also, we’re planning to see how many times I need to type the word “rawr” before my spellchecker snaps and murders me through my computer screen.

Close your eyes.

Imagine, if you will, that you have a mage. Ha ha, of course you have a mage. Sometimes I crack myself up. Now imagine that your mage has gear, but that gear is not optimal. Now open your eyes.

Hello, every mage ever.

Yeah, chances are pretty close to 100% that no matter who you are and how religiously you play the game, your mage, beloved though he may be, does not have every slot filled with best-in-slot gear and does not have every item perfectly gemmed, enchanted and reforged so that your DPS is up to its fullest possible potential. WoW is a computer game — an old one, sure, but still home to millions of algorithms and formulas and computations and other math terms that I don’t fully understand. It would take, I firmly believe, a robot from the future to calculate all of those numbers and variables and turn them into something a human brain can parse accurately enough to actually benefit from.

Well, mages and magesses, I have recently contacted Kavan, one of the main authors of the ubiquitous gear optimization program Rawr, and I can tell you that he is that robot from the future. I only pray he can protect us from whatever other, more evil and technologically advanced robot from the future that might at some point follow him through the wormhole with a directive to kill our unborn children or something, because you know that’s what’s happening.
