WoW Rookie: How to learn about raiding through heroics

New around here? WoW Rookie has your back! Get all our collected tips, tricks and tactics for new players in the WoW Rookie Guide. WoW Rookie is about more than just being new to the game; it’s about checking out new classes, new playstyles, and new zones.
We all know that you should do heroic 5-mans before you start raiding. It’s more than just a maxim or saying; you need the gear, experience, and practice. But a reader recently mailed me and asked:
I’ve only been trying to do endgame for the last few months, since I didn’t have time while working a full time job. Now, I am trying to learn how to raid by doing heroic dungeons. It’s going pretty rough and I’m getting some pretty good gear but I have a question.
Ignoring the gear itself, what am I getting out of these dungeons? Do raid bosses actually work anything like heroic bosses?
It’s a fair question, and I can see how someone new to the endgame might feel frustrated at not being in the “real” game. The bad news is that raid bosses often do work a little differently; some tactics and maneuvers that exist in raiding have no correlation to 5-man dungeons. For example, you never swap tanks in 5-man instances because you only have one tank at a time.
But all is not lost. It might actually surprise you how many raid boss tactics mirror 5-man encounters. Let’s take a look at some of the T11 bosses and which 5-mans might help prepare you for them. (We’re looking at T11 bosses because, admittedly, you shouldn’t go straight from 5-man heroics to the Firelands.)

The Queue: When I am through with you …

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mike Sacco will be your host today.
… there won’t be anything left.
Trefpoid asked:
Has anybody else noticed that female Naga have been given shirts all of a sudden? Why has this happened? Did someone find that female naga where to provocative going around topless or is Blizzard trying out something else? a friend suggested maybe they are trying to see how they look with armour, maybe as a future playable race, but Blizzard has already stated that playable races need to have legs.. so what has happened here? It’s really weird to see all these nagas with chinese styled clothings all of a sudden and with no explanation.
It does seem to be an intended change, though bear in mind that naga have been able to wear armor since The Burning Crusade. It could be that there’s something being planned for the naga, or at least there’s been a movement to humanize them (or elfize them, as it were). As of right now, though, if you want playable naga, the closest you’ll probably get is the WoW TCG‘s upcoming Throne of the Tides expansion.

Blood Pact: How to trounce through Firelands as a warlock

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Blood Pact for affliction, demonology and destruction warlocks. For those who disdain the watered-down arts that other cling to like a safety blanket … For those willing to test their wills against the nether and claim the power that is their right … Blood Pact welcomes you.
Being relatively newish to writing Blood Pact, I’m not sure if I’ve yet said this. On the off chance that I have, well, then it at least bears repeating: I am a raider. What I do, what I care about, is going into the most relevant content and kicking butt. Not only am I a raider, but I raid as a DPSer. Though my main might be a hybrid-capable for healing or tanking, I have absolutely no interest in either of those concepts. There’s a reason that the first four alts that I pushed to level 85 were the pure classes.
That being said, even I know that damage cannot be — is not — everything. The tired phrase that dead DPS is zero DPS certainly holds true. More so than that, very encounters are even about raw damage potential, anyway. Although Firelands is a lot less gimmick-based than tier 11 raids were, nearly every boss encounter is going to require some non-DPS related task that has a much higher chance of wiping the raid than anything else. Are you prepared to deal with every situation? Let’s find out.

15 Minutes of Fame: Holding fast to Azeroth through the journey of Alzheimer’s

From Hollywood celebrities to the guy next door, millions of people have made World of Warcraft a part of their lives. How do you play WoW? We’re giving each approach its own 15 Minutes of Fame.
Bill Craig is doing it right. The 61-year-old WoW player has suffered from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease for half a dozen years now, winding his way through Azeroth for about half that time. He’s ridden a bicycle all the way from Carrollton, Texas, to Carrollton, Georgia, to raise money and awareness for animal welfare — not once but twice. He’s a Vietnam vet. He serves as an advocate with the Alzheimer’s Association, having recently returned from a trip to Washington, D.C., with his wife to meet with legislators about bills impacting Alzheimer’s. Bill’s contributions and commitment to his community and country are impressive for any seasoned professional, let alone someone living with a disease that monkeywrenches a person’s thinking, memory and behavior.
I know Bill’s doing it right because I live under the baleful gaze of Alzheimer’s, too. My mother passed away two years ago after a particularly cruel struggle with the disease. She began batting aside its first tendrils while caring for my grandmother, also stripped bare by Alzheimer’s. My father wanders through a related type of dementia — perversely, with all the sets of symptoms my mother never developed. (Ding! We hit the jackpot, I guess.) In my work, I’ve written about Alzheimer’s and the incredible burdens it places on families, parents with young children who now also care for their own parents over the painfully protracted years it takes life to trickle away. Alzheimer’s is inextricably part of my life, too.
So none of that makes me special — Alzheimer’s grip on families is all too common — but it does mean I can say one thing with certainty: Bill Craig is doing it right. His view of Azeroth, however, is very different from yours or mine.

WoW goes free-to-play through level 20

Welcome! It’s a good day to be one of the few remaining human beings who isn’t playing World of Warcraft. While previously players who set up a new trial account were limited by 14 days of playtime and a level cap, Blizzard announced today that players on any trial account are able to play the game forever for free. The catch, of course, is that players are capped at level 20 until they upgrade. You can try out any of the races and classes available up through The Burning Crusade expansion, including the blood elves and draenei, with no time limit and no limit on characters created.
If you do get the hankering for more WoW thanks to the trial, you can get the digital Battle Chest, which includes classic WoW and The Burning Crusade, for .99 (as soon as the Blizzard site works again, anyway).
Trying out WoW for the first time with one of these trials? Have a friend who’s just starting out and needs a push in the right direction? Check out WoW Rookie, our resource for new or casual players, with topics like:
- Turn WoW into quality time by playing with a partner
- Pick the class that’s right for you
- Learn how to run dungeons with groups
For a full list of the restrictions placed on endless trial accounts, check after the break.
