Low Culture: Lose yourself in the wild possibilities of Skyrim

Shifting Perspectives: Haste and you — a guide to not wanting to kill yourself

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Shifting Perspectives for cat, bear, restoration and balance druids. This Tuesday, we had to Google the Goldilocks story because we kept getting it wrong.
Once upon a time, a blogger ventured into a magical forest in search of a stat known as haste. In the forest, there was a cottage where a family of three bears — Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear — all lived. So the blogger –
“Hey, wait a minute,” said the bears. “We don’t care about haste. Haste is terrible. Clear off.”
So the blogger left the bears’ cottage and ventured deeper into the forest, eventually finding a family of trees, which was interesting insofar as the forest was itself comprised of trees, and by all rights, this made no sense. Like the bears, the trees were a family unit with the requisite Papa Tree, Mama Tree, and Baby Tree. Fortunately for the blogger, the trees were out on a walk (just work with me here) when she arrived, and she sat down to sample the dinner they had left behind.
“Haste!” said the blogger, delighted at her discovery. “The trees like haste!”
She sat at Papa Tree’s plate. “He has too much haste,” she said. She sat at Mama Tree’s plate. “She has too little haste,” she said. She sat at Baby Tree’s plate. “This haste is just right!” she said and gobbled it up.
“There’s no such thing as too much haste,” said Papa Tree outside the window, observing the loss of his offspring’s dinner. “And do you have Dark Intent? I think you’ll find that my wife’s haste is — “
“You can have too much haste,” argued Mama Tree. “How much do you have right now? Didn’t you just past the breakpoint for a ninth tick of Wild Growth? Why aren’t you focusing on mastery? It — “
And so the blogger sprinted out of the magical forest and threw herself in front of a magical train, sobbing on her way to mortal oblivion, “I was told that there would be no math in this expansion!”

Breakfast Topic: Design yourself as a raid boss
This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.
One day, I was running a few low-level guild members through Zul’Farrak. We finished the dungeon, and I took the opportunity to sit in his throne, informing my group that I had claimed the dungeon for my own and I was now the final boss.
We all had a good laugh, but that got me wondering. What kind of raid boss would players make? For me, my main was a ret paladin at the time. I sometimes pinch heal, too, so I think I would have to have some annoying healing ability, like the Twin Val’kyr when they use Twin’s Pact. I love my bubble, so I would want to have that; maybe pop the bubble and cast a big heal. The raid would have to dispel/break my bubble and interrupt. Maybe some giant, AoE holy attack that opens up holy fissures in the ground. They’d do damage but make healers more powerful, to keep up with any enrage-like effects.
If you had to convert yourself into a dungeon or raid boss, what unique mechanics or abilities would you have? How would they reflect your abilities, unique playstyle and personality? What quotes would your character have? Would you have a cool story behind why you’re there? Who are you as a raid boss?

Breakfast Topic: As a WoW player, do you consider yourself a roleplayer?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider’s pages.
Adventuring in Azeroth, I never considered myself to be a roleplayer — a point upon which I prided myself until recently. I was winning a debate among friends about my non-roleplaying status until one pointed out that WoW is an MMO RPG. My face reddened as I admitted yes, WoW was a roleplaying game, and therefore I must be roleplaying.
Crestfallen, I considered the implications for the rest of the day. Did this mean I had to transfer my character to a roleplaying server? Would I starve if I did not maintain the Well Fed buff? Am I going to have to change my name to something more Azeroth-appropriate? Thankfully, the answer was no to all my questions, though the revelation was not completely wasted.
Our friendly debate gave me a fresh perspective on roleplaying. Azeroth suddenly became host to a wide spectrum of roleplayers, from the lowbie who bought his girlfriend a white kitten on their anniversary to the fellow who wrote a novel of fiction about his character and chastised me for not removing my plate armor before jumping into the water lest I sink to the bottom and drown. The very nature of playing WoW is to roleplay.
Where on the spectrum of roleplaying do you see yourself? How do you think it compares to the way others view your degree of roleplay?

Breakfast Topic: Make yourself at home

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW.com.
My gryphon soared away from Ironforge as I headed to Loch Modan. Loremaster of Eastern Kingdoms lay 200 quests away, and my journey would pick up in Thelsamar. My leather soles hit green earth and I quickly picked up the quests I had previously left behind. Mounting one of my swift sabers, I made a leap off a nearby embankment. I stopped momentarily to consider my next move. Should I use one of my few remaining Elixirs of Water Walking to ride across the lake, or should I shift into Aquatic Form and race under the water?
While considering my options, I glanced around, and I was surprised to find a small home nestled into the wall of earth behind me. In front of the house stood its owner, fishing trainer Warg Deepwater. His wife, Khara, stood on the porch. They welcomed me into their small but cozy home, complete with a round fireplace, a wooden table and pictures on the wall.
This house and its occupants got my attention. Here in this world of vicious animals, monsters, dragons, undead, evil kings and heroes lived a normal family, doing what they always did. It struck me as a token of warmth and familiarity nestled into a land of sometimes cataclysmic chaos. I felt welcome, like I could take a seat on those steps and discuss Ironforge politics or family gossip. Maybe we could pour a few mugs of ale and listen to a chorus of crickets while we watched the sun go down over the lake.
